Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth

Dartmouth Health System

Dartmouth Health and The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth are pleased to announce a national search for the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. This is a remarkable opportunity to lead an exceptional clinical department known nationally for providing outstanding patient care, fostering the medical and biomedical education of the next generation, and supporting innovative research.

Dartmouth Health is New Hampshire's largest, and only academic, health system. Dartmouth Health serves a population of 1.9 million patients across northern New England and provides access to more than 1,800 providers. Anchored by the academic Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH, the system includes the NCI-designated Dartmouth Cancer Center, the Dartmouth Health Children's hospital, 5 member hospitals, 30 ambulatory clinics across the state of New Hampshire and southern Vermont, a Visiting Nurse Association, and the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care.

The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth was established in Hanover, NH in 1797, and to this day, strives to improve the lives of the people it serves: students, patients, and local and global communities. As one of America's top medical schools, Geisel is committed to creating new generations of diverse leaders who will help solve the most vexing challenges in health care. Geisel and Dartmouth Health are separate organizational entities that collaborate intimately on research and education, and share key infrastructure programs. Additional clinical and academic collaborations include the Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, VT; the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice; the Tuck School of Business; the Thayer School of Engineering; the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies; and the Arts and Sciences departments and programs of Dartmouth College.

Anesthesiology at Dartmouth began in 1941, and by 1946, both the School of Nurse Anesthesia and the Anesthesiology Residency program had been started. As early leaders in Multidisciplinary Critical Care, Regional Anesthesia, and Pain Medicine, the Department of Anesthesiology was formally established in 1989. Today, Dartmouth Health has several hospitals and various anesthesia care models across the region, but the core program is located at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (DHMC) in Lebanon, NH.

At DHMC, anesthesia coverage is provided to approximately 40 anesthetizing locations daily including Outpatient Surgery Center rooms and 25 operating rooms in the main hospital for services including trauma, acute care and general surgery, neuro, cardiac, thoracic, obstetrics, otolaryngology, plastics, and pediatric surgery. Off-site and non-OR locations include GI and pulmonary endoscopy, EP lab, structural Interventional Cardiology, Interventional radiology, Pediatric Sedation, MRI, Minor procedure, Labor and Delivery, Radiation Therapy, and the Center for Surgical Innovation (CSI). On average, we give 35,000 anesthetics per year. We also provide physician coverage to the Surgical ICU, Acute Pain Service, Cardiovascular Critical Care Unit (CVCC), Neuro-ICU, and tele-ICU, and Perioperative Care Clinic (PCC). Our current team at DHMC consists of 44 anesthesiologists and 41 CRNAs. We also have 4 Pain Specialists who perform over 5,000 interventional pain procedures per year.

The Anesthesiology Residency includes a transitional year program and has between 7-9 residents per year. We also have an Anesthesiology Critical Care Fellowship (1-3 fellows per year), a Chronic Pain Fellowship (4 fellows per year), and a Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship (2 fellows per year). Our main areas of research activity include Perioperative Frailty, Cognitive Decline, Perioperative Pain Management, and Fluoroscopically Guided Epidural Catheter Placement, Cardiac Function during Active Labor, and Stress and Safety in Non-Operating Room Environments. One of our anesthesiologists also leads the Dartmouth Anesthesiology Innovation Lab which partners with innovators, engineers, and entrepreneurs to develop ideas to support patient care, education, and research.

In this leadership role, the Chair of Anesthesiology will have primary responsibility and accountability for the overall direction, operation, and management of the Department in accordance with the mission and goals of Dartmouth Health and The Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. In addition, the Chair will collaborate and coordinate with other Dartmouth Health member hospitals in support and growth of clinical programs, academic advancement, and research opportunities.

As the clinical leader of the Department, the Chair will have full accountability for the establishment and implementation of Anesthesiology services, strategies, and operations for Dartmouth Health, which includes all Dartmouth Health locations, regional members, and affiliates. The Chair is also an integral member of the Dartmouth Health Senior Leadership Group and of the Geisel Dean's Academic Board.
