Northwell, one of the nation’s largest academic healthcare systems, is recruiting for a Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation & MCS. The Heart Transplant program is a part of the newly established Northwell Transplant Institute. This leadership position will help implement the vision of comprehensive advanced heart failure and transplant care across the entire Northwell system. This position will require from the ideal candidate strong clinical, administrative, investigative, and educational involvement.
The heart transplant program, established in 2018 and based at North Shore University Hospital, Manhasset, NY is the first and only heart transplant destination in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Northwell’s cardiac surgical program is one of the largest in New York State, performing more than 3,400 adult surgeries across the network. Furthermore, Northwell has the largest MCS & LVAD program on Long Island with the lowest mortality and readmission measures in the region. We offer the full spectrum of care to advanced heart and lung failure patients, including cardiopulmonary exercise testing, hemodynamic monitor implantation, LVAD and transplant, advanced imaging, electrophysiology, and participation in investigator-initiated and sponsored clinical trials.
The Northwell Transplant Institute combines all solid organ transplant programs which include the heart, lung, liver, and kidney programs, under one umbrella. The Transplant Institute has a strong partnership with the Departments of Medicine, Cardiology, and Cardiothoracic Surgery as well as Northwell’s Cardiovascular Institute. With an integrated network of dedicated interdisciplinary clinical and administrative professionals, Northwell has continued to invest in system-wide heart failure programs across several hospitals, regions, and ambulatory sites. Northwell also has a robust ECMO and ECMO-to-go program, supported by the Northwell Center for Emergency Medicine Services (EMS). Northwell EMS operates one of the largest hospital-based EMS services in the country, an integrated centralized transfer center, as well as a multi-aircraft air-medical transport program.
The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications and experience:
Education and Experience:
- Board certified in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
- Fellowship trained and meets eligibility requirements of Primary Heart Transplant Surgeon delineated in UNOS bylaws
- Minimum of 6 years of attending level cardiac transplant and mechanical circulatory device support experience
- Leadership experience in a healthcare setting, preferably within a large health system or academic medical center
- Strong knowledge of cardiac transplantation management guidelines, evidence-based practices, and quality improvement methodologies
- Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire multidisciplinary teams, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning
