Overview

About This Position:

This position is located at Kimbrough Ambulatory Care Center, Fort Meade, MD.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide direct assistance to the staff gastroenterology physician during invasive gastrointestinal procedures.

The secondary purpose includes preparing the patient, the equipment, and the procedure area to perform invasive procedures; and following completion of the procedure, to recover and prepare the equipment and procedure area for the next procedure.

Responsibilities

As a Medical Instrument Technician (Gastroenterology) you will:

  • Assist practitioners in various clinical, diagnostic, therapeutic and emergency endoscopic procedures, such as esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), colonoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound
  • Assist with all types of dilations (i.e., Maloney dilations, wire guided Savary-Gillard dilations, and endoscopic balloon dilations), esophageal or colonic stent placements, and endoscopic biopsies and polypectomies
  • Independently set up and perform Capsule Endoscopy (esophageal or small bowel), PH studies, and Hydrogen Breath test
  • Collect/handle labeling of specimens
  • Set up GI procedure rooms with, and operate, all required items for each procedure such as video equipment, endoscopes, endoscope flushing system, image management systems, computers and monitors, cautery units, and reprocessing equipment
  • Have experience in GI procedures, outpatient clinic setting and/or equivalent experience
  • Have experience and knowledge of sterile processing and endoscope care
  • Have experience in the clinic setting doing intake and support of the Registered Nurse
  • Select, set up, adjust, calibrate, and operate equipment for designated procedures
  • Receive and position patients for various endoscopic procedures. Instruct patients on initial preparation and provide an explanation of the procedures to allay fears and secure their cooperation
  • Work collaboratively with the nursing staff, plan and discuss each procedure with the GI team professionals, and assure that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the GI procedures
  • Asses and communicate interpersonally both written and verbal
  • Manage multiple competing priorities. Provide and coordinate direct health care to patients and act as a role model in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for persons with various medical diagnoses
  • Work effectively with all levels of healthcare providers, patients, and families
  • Demonstrate sound judgment in problem solving, decision making, change process and conflict resolution in matters related to clinical practice issues

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes demonstrated/documented experience in assisting physician in various gastroenterology procedures such as endoscopic procedures, colonoscopies or anoscopes. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-05)

OR

Education: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
