Job Summary

In general, the Program Director is responsible for the leadership, organization, operation, and the general administration of the Anesthesiology Residency. The Program Director establishes the strategic direction of the program and is responsible for the standards, quality and reputation of the Anesthesiology Residency Program. The Program Director is expected to integrate the Anesthesiology Residency Program with physician practices and hospital clinical services in a manner that enhances value and quality, and that promotes an optimal environment for professional practice and graduate medical education.

Job Duties

Required Qualifications:

• Requisite specialty expertise and documented educational and administrative expertise acceptable to the review committee.

• Current certification in the specialty by the American Board of Anesthesiology.

• Current medical licensure and appropriate medical staff appointment.

• Active involvement in the care of patients. Prior to assuming this position, a minimum of two years full-time professional activity in Anesthesiology, as well as teaching experience in an Anesthesiology residency is required.

Responsibilities:

Assist in the recruitment of qualified Anesthesiology faculty.

2. Maintain accreditation for the program from ACGME and its Anesthesiology residency review committee.

3. Participate, with the DIO/DME and VPAA, in the overall formulation, review and revision of policies and procedures, and structure and content of the curriculum for the program .

4. Recruit, interview, and select residents, and facilitate involvement of residents with the medical center community.

5. Develop an evaluation process for resident performance and participate in the evaluation and promotion of residents.

6. Participate in competency evaluation of residents, at least semi-annually.

7. Represent the program on medical center committees, including the graduate medical education committee.

8. Represent the program on appropriate committees of the affiliated medical school.

9. Continuously monitor the effectiveness of the curriculum and develop its evaluation process, including a subjective evaluation instrument to survey the residents and faculty on the effectiveness of curriculum.

10. Modify the program curriculum to incorporate results of the evaluations of the curriculum and changes in medical education theory, as reflected in ACGME requirements.

11. Ensure conferences are scheduled to permit resident attendance on a regular basis, and resident time must be protected from interruption by routine clinical duties.

12. Ensure faculty development and faculty participation in scholarly activities.

13. Participate in research, scholarly activities, and quality improvement activities to enhance the academic reputation of the program.

14. Institute a formal mechanism specifically designed for promotion of physician well- being and prevention of impairment. Institute a structured and facilitated group for resident support that meets on a regular basis.

15. Devote sufficient time to the residency program (i.e., resident administration, resident teaching, resident precepting and attending duties, and exclusive of time spent in direct patient care without the presence of residents).

16. Designate a specific time commitment to patient care to maintain clinical skills.

17. Devise a method by which all procedures are supervised and evaluated.

18. With the faculty, devise a credentialing process to establish if a resident is competent to perform specific procedures.

19. Ensure that educational experiences are provided in either block format or longitudinally.

20. Maintain compliance with all ACGME requirements for program directors found in the ACGME common and program specific requirements.
