Description: 

The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine at the University of Houston is recruiting for a Senior Associate Dean of Education, to join the leadership team of Founding Dean Stephen J. Spann, MD, MBA. The curriculum of this community-based medical school has a strong focus on primary care; behavioral, community, and population health; high value healthcare; social determinants of health and health disparities; and partnering with communities with major health disparities to improve health and healthcare; and is taught utilizing best practices in medical education. The first class of students was admitted in July 2020.

As a member of the College of Medicine leadership team, the Senior Associate Dean of Education will be responsible for the management and continuous quality improvement of the educational programs. In addition to this administrative assignment, the successful candidate will also spend 20% time providing clinical care.

The Senior Associate Dean of Education will report directly to the Dean of the College of Medicine.

The Senior Associate Dean of Education functions as an at-will employee under the general supervision of the Dean of the College of Medicine and works in collaboration with other College of Medicine leadership and the appropriate university offices and within existing university policies, procedures, and practices.

Specific duties include the following:

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Oversight of academic-focused components of the COM, including the offices of:
    • Student Affairs
    • Admissions 
    • Diversity and Outreach
    • Medical Education
    • Graduate Medical Education
    • Continuing Medical Education
    • Faculty Affairs
    • Accreditation preparation, compliance and documentation of all materials for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education.
  • Development and implementation of medical student progress and promotion.
  • Collaborate with other members of the COM’s executive leadership team to recommend, establish, and implement policies and procedures to ensure a rewarding medical education experience aligned with LCME accreditation.
  • Participate in relevant standing educational committees and meet regularly with education-related assistant and associate deans in the COM.
  • Participate in the hiring of relevant faculty and senior staff.
  • Collaborate to develop and implement strategies for COM graduates in career opportunities.
  • Foster a culture of diversity and inclusion within the COM.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships; work cooperatively and collegially with others in a manner consistent with a workplace of dignity and respect.
  • Manage preparation and implementation of academic budgets and maintains accountability for academic expenditures.
  • Evaluate and recommend allocation and use of space and equipment for all academic programs.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of the College of Medicine strategic plan, as it relates to the educational enterprise.
  • Monitor student and trainee academic opportunities in collaboration with Department Chairs and the Associate Dean, Office of Medical Education.
  • Oversee pipeline programs from GME to affiliated hospitals, in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education and Faculty Affairs.
  • Anticipate and respond to changes in accreditation requirements and changes in medical education as they relate to clinical training.
  • 20% of effort will be dedicated to clinical practice.

Salary and rank commensurate with academic achievements and experience.

Qualifications: 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree (MD or DO)
  • Current medical board certification and license or eligibility for a license to practice medicine in Texas
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in an accredited medical school 
  • Record of successively advanced leadership roles evidencing skills and abilities to communicate successfully with diverse stakeholders including faculty, administrators, staff, students, benefactors, members of the professional community, business partners, and potential collaborators
  • Senior faculty status with an established record of successful leadership, faculty promotion and recognition, collaboration and experience in executive roles in a complex academic institution.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a complex environment
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with multiple and diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Academic credentials meriting a faculty appointment at Professor 
  • Experience with LCME and ACGME accreditation standards
  • Financial and operational acumen
  • Appreciation for the importance of community-based healthcare
  • Ability to strategically collaborate with partners maintaining various missions
