About:
Mather Hospital, a member of Northwell Health, is an accredited 248-bed, non-profit community teaching hospital. Founded in 1929 as the first general hospital in the Town of Brookhaven, Mather Hospital has consistently fulfilled its original patient care mission of providing a wide spectrum of healthcare services of the highest quality to the residents of Suffolk County. In addition, Mather is a three-time Magnet designated hospital and has repeatedly ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best Hospitals list as among the best in both New York State and the New York metro area.
Mather Hospital maintains a culture of deep and genuine commitment to patient safety and quality improvement and has received 17 “A” ratings from the Leapfrog Group, the most of any hospital in Suffolk County. The Hospital is also in the midst of a $90M campus renovation that includes the addition of a cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology lab, a renovated lobby entrance and a new emergency department with a separate behavioral health area. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality clinical care, educating the current and future generations of health care professionals, promoting health education, and caring for the community.
Mather Hospital’s Behavioral Health services offer a full range of inpatient and outpatient programs and is one of the few Long Island hospitals to offer inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services for both adolescents and adults. It is the only acute care hospital in Suffolk County with an adolescent psychiatric unit and an adolescent partial hospitalization program. Our program includes:
- 27 Bed Adult Psychiatric Unit
- 10 Bed Adolescent Psychiatric Unit
- Adult Partial Hospitalization
- Eating Disorder Partial Hospitalization
- Mental Health Clinic
- Outpatient Psychiatric Physician Services
- Chemical Dependency
- Gambling Addiction
Our Residency and Fellowship Programs The Zucker School of Medicine/Northwell Health at Mather Hospital’s Psychiatry Residency Program continually strives to fulfill its mission: to train well-rounded community psychiatrists who will deliver high-quality care to the patients and communities they serve. Our program demonstrates its commitment to excellence by respecting our community's multicultural diversity in our daily operations and practices. The residency program guides and mentors residents to achieve overall clinical and academic excellence in the field of psychiatry, while addressing the critical shortage of community psychiatrists in the local area. The program is dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for the people of Port Jefferson and its surrounding towns. Fostering creativity, embracing change, and mutual support within the program is important in pursuing this mission. This multidisciplinary and patient centered clinical experience is complemented by a comprehensive and resident-centered didactic curriculum.
Mather Hospital is a community hospital with the strong backing of a large academic institution, which provides seemingly endless opportunities for our residents and faculty. Feedback is valued and sought out frequently in order to enhance the program and hospital. Wellness in both faculty and residents is incredibly important to the residency program and Mather Hospital. For this reason, the Mather Wellness Committee meets regularly to discuss initiatives to continue to enhance overall well-being. The Mather Psychiatry Residency Program accepts six residents per class for a full complement of 24.
Throughout Northwell Health, we also offer robust training programs at many of our academic centers, including fellowships in Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, and Geriatric Psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital, Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. We also offer residency programs in General Adult Psychiatry at Zucker Hillside Hospital as well as Psychiatry at Staten Island University Hospital. The residents and fellows work closely with faculty to provide high-quality care for interesting and complex cases that serve as the foundation of their education.
About Northwell’s Behavioral Health Service Line:
The Behavioral Health Service Line’s (BHSL) mission is to improve the behavioral health of the patients and communities Northwell serves through a continuum of care distributed across the 21 hospital system and organized around four pillars: 1. Digital self-directed care, 2. Integration of behavioral health into schools, medical settings, and community contexts, 3. Specialty clinics, and 4. Subspecialty centers of excellence and intermediate levels of care (partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, crisis/urgent/emergent care, and inpatient). These pillars will soon be supported by a virtual navigation/access center.
To facilitate access and address stigma, Northwell embeds behavioral health in settings where patients commonly engage and interact. The BHSL partners with school districts to provide screening, assessments, and ongoing care combined with teacher/administrator and parent training. The Behavioral Health College Partnership collaborates with over 100 higher education institutions in the greater New York region to provide crisis, inpatient, and followup outpatient care. Moreover, the BHSL has integrated behavioral health into over 100 adult and pediatric primary care practices – by the end of 2023, collaborative care will exist in all primary care practices plus many OB, oncology, transplant surgery, and other medical specialty clinics. Finally, the BHSL’s partnerships extend deep into the community with CBOs and faith-based leaders, especially in the neighborhoods of greatest need.
Accompanying these integrated services, Northwell also has a robust network of specialty and subspecialty clinics and intensive services. Northwell has hospital-based and community outpatient practices distributed throughout the system with over 600,000 outpatient visits per year and over 500 inpatient psychiatry/substance use beds across 7 hospitals. The Zucker Hillside Hospital is the academic hub for psychiatry at Northwell. The campus includes 220 inpatient beds, partial hospitalization programs, a nationally recognized ECT program, a full continuum of outpatient care with specialty and subspecialty clinics (300,000 visits per year), and outpatient addiction services. Subspecialty centers include bipolar, peripartum depression, OCD, early onset psychosis, college-aged patients, clozapine, long-acting injectables, children and adolescents, adolescent eating disorders, treatment resistant depression and interventional psychiatry, and geriatric psychiatry. The campus is home to training programs for medical and nursing students, advanced clinical provider trainees, psychology trainees, and residents and fellows and to research teams with pioneering work in clinical translational research and implementation science.
Working collaboratively across the health care system, we aim to continually identify and create optimal treatment environments and options, providing the necessary mental health services that keep our communities healthy and improve lives. In this, Northwell is unique in its matrix reporting relationship between the respective hospitals and the Service Line.
