Job Description:
The Senior Medical Director, Surgical Operations, will work collaboratively in a (dyad/triad) partnership to define, establish, and oversee the work of Surgical Operations, working collaboratively with all disciplines including specialty care, community care, clinical programs, shared clinical services, and clinically integrated networks. Provides leadership, oversight, and support for the development of a culture of high reliability and the measurement of care, identifying opportunities, building relationships, and executing on strategies to drive the performance and measured improvement of all Surgical Operations. Perform all needed tasks necessary to provide efficient, high-quality patient care in procedural areas overseen by Surgical Operations. Oversee physicians in their role as surgery medical director their respective care site and assist them with goals, mentor them in leadership, and involve them in the development and implementation of operational initiatives. Responsible in tandem with operations and nursing officers for the administrative, financial, and clinical performance of the operating rooms of Intermountain. The Senior Medical Director will assist in maintaining an appropriate environment in the operating room.

Scope

This is a region-wide leadership role with key organizational relationships across Intermountain Healthcare with a specific focus on leading the performance and continuous improvement of Surgical Operations. This position reports to the ACMO for Hospitals in Intermountain Health's Canyons Region.

Job Essentials

Lead Physician/Advanced practice provider collaborations and defines and establishes care models that best meet our patient's needs and our system fundamentals.

Ensure that evidence-based clinical care standards for Surgical Operations are established and effectively implemented across Intermountain for appropriate caregivers.

Responsible for execution of policies and procedures related to operating room environments.

Assist in educating compliance with appropriate standards required by all governmental agencies.

In partner with leadership, perform scheduled reviews of appropriateness of cases. Concerning behavior addressed as well as communicated to hospital and clinical program leadership.

Champion quality initiatives and policies and reports infractions collaborating to eliminate future infractions.

Maintain acceptable patient satisfaction rates.

Attendance in committee and council meetings.

Address performance concerns for providers, including peer review for cases within Surgical Operations.

Collaborate with colleagues in Intermountain Health's other regions to establish, execute, and monitor key performance indicators for the perioperative services.

Maintain standards of safety.

Ensure that inappropriate or unprofessional behavior in the perioperative areas is addressed.

Conduct annual performance reviews/conversations for physician leaders within the Surgical Operations structure. Conduct regular check-in sessions with physician leaders within the Surgical Operations structure.

Address capital needs of the system.

Promote employee engagement.

Develop and maintain operational, financial, and fundamentals of extraordinary care metrics.

Collaborate with clinical programs for strategic and best practice development and implementation.

Development and implementation of committees or councils related to the needs of Surgical Operations including but not limited to utilization, quality, new products, and strategy.

Leadership of affinity groups related to Surgical Operations.

Partner with inpatient hospital operations to maximize environment of care.

Maintain environment of collegiality with consultants as well as in-patient caregivers.

Establish professional standards for physicians within Intermountain Surgical Operations.

Ensure physician alignment for Surgical Operations across the Intermountain system.

Partnership with SCO for cost savings initiatives and control of appropriate technology, devices, and products being introduced into or currently used for procedural care.

Support and drive results for the fundamentals of care for Intermountain with concern for reducing the cost of care/per member per month (pmpm), with focus on improving the affordability of healthcare.

Provide or facilitate specialty specific review and/or consultation as requested by SelectHealth.

Provide or facilitate specialty specific consultation as requested by Care Transformation/Information Systems.

Minimum Qualifications

Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree. Education must be obtained through an ACGME or AOA accredited institution, will be verified.

ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification in a surgical specialty.

Active Utah and/or Idaho Medical Licensure, or in process of obtaining licensure, is required.
  • and -

Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.

At least three years of clinical experience in a surgical service practice setting.
  • and -

Three years of experience leading successful improvement in clinical settings. - and -

Three years of progressive healthcare leadership experience.
  • and -

Experience with change management with the ability to provide leadership in the adaptation and implementation of new processes and /or technology that enhance safety.
  • and -

Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in Business, Healthcare Administration, Public Health or other business- related field.

Trained in improvement science (i.e., Six Sigma, Lean, Project management, Advanced Training Program) - and -

Experience working in a complex health system (hospitals, ambulatory clinics, post-acute care, etc.). - and -

Demonstrated leadership of clinicians.
  • and -

Certified in healthcare communication, coaching or an equivalent experience with external entities that drive and support Experience of Care approaches and standards, including government agencies, academic institutions, universities and related organizations of higher education, and other public institutions.

Physical Requirements:

Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.
