The Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago invites applications for the position of Chief, Section of Cardiology. The appointee will be an accomplished program builder with a strong background in all aspects of cardiology, an experienced leader to support and enhance the Section’s clinical, research, outreach, and educational efforts, and have a national reputation in scholarship. The appointee will provide strategic, innovative, and operational leadership, and will have responsibility for the clinical and academic performance of the Section. The Chief will provide visionary leadership, support, and mentoring of faculty for the growth of an outstanding clinical and scholarly Section. Academic rank (Associate Professor or Professor), tenure, and compensation (including a generous package of fringe benefits) are dependent upon qualifications.

The Section of Cardiology has a track record of excellence in clinical care, discovery, and education and continues to focus its tripartite mission of providing high-quality patient care, innovative research, and dedicated teaching. U.S. News & World Report ranked the cardiology/heart surgery program as #44 in the July 2022 Best Hospital rankings, and Newsweek/Statista ranked the Heart and Vascular Center as the 29th best in the world and the best in Illinois. The Section has 31 full-time faculty with expertise in basic, clinical, and translational research, genetics of cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, arrhythmias, heart failure and transplantation, developmental biology, oxygen sensing and pulmonary hypertension, and evolving programs in outcomes research and quality of care. Faculty members in the Section are leaders in the institution, medical school, and medical center and play a central role in the University of Chicago Medicine’s nationally ranked Heart and Vascular Institute that provides the delivery of care to heart and vascular patients. The Section is also home to the Center for Arrhythmia Care, using image fusion and a magnetically guided EP lab to enhance the safety and efficacy of ablation of arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation.

Clinical: The Section of Cardiology has programs in advanced imaging, electrophysiology, heart failure and transplantation, percutaneous valve and structural heart disease interventions, vascular medicine (including pulmonary hypertension), and cardiovascular genetics. A newly created Multimodality Imaging Center, directed by Section faculty, offers CT, MR, and echocardiography and provides great opportunities for research and training. This center involves an important partnership with Radiology. The Chief will provide oversight for all of the clinical programs to ensure the highest possible quality of care, patient safety, and satisfaction while working to optimize clinical operations and efficiency.

Research: Provide guidance and support to expand the Section’s portfolio of grants, contracts, and clinical trials from bench to bedside. The active and robust research program is represented by direct faculty awards and/or participation (via subcontracts) in many federally funded grants, non-federally funded research, and industry-sponsored clinical trials.

Education: The Section is home to one of the oldest NIH-funded T32 cardiovascular research training programs. In addition, there are three ACGME accredited clinical fellowship training programs in EP, Interventional Cardiology, HF, and a non-accredited program in Imaging.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent, 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois, and 3) be board certified or eligible in Cardiology.

To be considered, those interested must apply through The University of Chicago’s Academic Recruitment job board, which uses Interfolio to accept applications: http://apply.interfolio.com/118551. Applicants must upload: a CV including bibliography and cover letter. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.
