H+H/Lincoln Hospital invites nominations and expressions of interest for the position of Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine. The Lincoln Hospital is a 362 bed, Level 1 Trauma center with one of the largest and busiest emergency departments in the nation with over 140,000 annual visits.

H+H/Lincoln is currently in a strong era of major investment and growth. This ambitious and innovative growth will improve access to high-quality patient care and address the South Bronx most challenging health threats. H+H/Lincoln is one of the 11 acute care hospitals in the largest public health system in the country. The Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine will be an outstanding leader and skilled physician, with a strong track record of program building and innovation. The Chair will be responsible for clinical, academic, and administrative activities of the Department and therefore they must have a deep knowledge of clinical practice; a strong commitment to training and career development in research and clinical care; and demonstrated leadership and administrative ability in a complex clinical enterprise.

The Chair must demonstrate a passion for mentoring and development of faculty and fellows, including interpersonal skills that will assure successful relationship building with a variety of internal and external stakeholders. The Chair will be charged with fostering an environment of collaboration, integrity, trust, and transparency between the Department and all other departments in the organization. They will work to create a stronger collective culture within the Department, bringing together the multidisciplinary people and programs with a shared vision and purpose, and thereby enhancing faculty engagement and development.

The Chair will bring vision to the task of drafting the Department's future, coupled with an ability to communicate in a fashion that inspires others to follow. They must be a consensus builder, while also capable of serving as an agent for change. The Chair will evaluate the current strengths of the Department, and identify areas for productive growth in clinical, educational, and research programs. From that assessment, they will establish a strategic overarching long-term plan for the Department.

Responsibilities:

Essential Duties will include:

Leadership
  • Effectively leads the EM Department toward excellence in the conduct of teaching, research, patient care delivery, administrative services and community activities.
  • Communicates the mission, vision and values of the hospital and Department to faculty and staff through personal example and commitment.
  • Has an understanding of the growing health needs of the community and develops ways to meet them.
  • Understands the needs and requirements of the department and effectively communicates and advocates for those with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Executive Officer.
  • Motivates and develops faculty and staff by accurately assessing and addressing their strengths, weaknesses and developmental needs. Clearly defines expectations and provides specific and regular feedback on performance and personal development.
  • Demonstrating principled leadership and sound professional, academic and business ethics, creates an environment of cooperation and trust. Champions new initiatives, assuming the risk and responsibility for the Department. Builds and maintains effective relationships with clinical and academic partners.
  • Actively participate and advocate for emergency medicine as a member of the system-wide Emergency Medicine Council.

Clinical
  • Oversees the provisions of outstanding patient care that is of the highest quality meeting all requirements of local, state and federal accrediting agencies.
  • Provide and manage direct patient care
  • Works closely with other Department Chairs to achieve common goals that improve the quality, service delivery and financial performance.
  • Develops and grows clinical services of the Department.
  • Ensures timely, customer-focused communication with physicians and hospital staff to support and enhance patient care.

Academic
  • Ensures adequate faculty effort, oversight, and support for programs of undergraduate and graduate medical education.
  • Responsible for the clinical education and training of students, interns and residents, and oversees their interaction with and treatment of patients.
  • Supports faculty pursuit of research and scholarly activity, consistent with their other duties.
  • Provides a departmental vision and environment to promote research and research funding.
  • Promotes cross departmental research projects.
  • Support and oversee the EM Program Director in management of the EM residency program.
  • Support a faculty with diverse expertise and training in critical care, toxicology, ultrasonography, research and scholarly activity, quality improvement and sexual assault response.

Administrative
  • Develops appropriate budget for the Department and manages the budget to ensure the attainment of fiscal targets.
  • Directs and facilitates the recruitment, retention and professional development of high quality faculty and staff and deploys them strategically to meet the needs of our community.
  • Serves, as appointed, on key committees and task forces within the hospital and the H+H system.
  • Supports diversity in the employment, education and development of faculty and staff, making decisions based on the principles of Affirmative Action and Equal Employment Opportunity.
  • Acts professionally and responsibly at all times, within and outside of the organization, contributing to a positive image of the Department and the hospital.


Qualifications:

Qualifications include:
  • Current NYS license (or the ability to obtain one)
  • Board Certified in Emergency Medicine
  • 5-10 years of experience, includes significant administrative and clinical experience
  • Prior academic record
