Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital, located 12 miles west of downtown Chicago and at six outpatient clinics across the region, offers primary, extended and specialty care to Veteran patients in the Chicago area. We are the largest VA in the state of Illinois, where more than a million Veterans reside. The hospital treats more than 44,000 veterans from World War II through the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

We currently have two positions open for Primary Care GAP providers. The Primary Care GAP incumbent will provide, via both TelePrimary Care and face to face, interim staffing/gap/float Primary Care Provider Coverage for all Primary Care clinics in General Medicine, Women's Health Center at Hines main campus and Hines' six Community Based Outpatient Clinics, which are located in Bourbonnais, Hoffman Estates, Joliet, North Aurora, Oak Lawn, and Peru Illinois. Incumbent works collaboratively with local CBOC staff and projects involving CBOC staff or patients. Maintains clinical and educational activities within Primary Care/General Medicine at Hines to stay grounded and relevant in the role at all sites. Training for TelePrimary Care delivery will be provided as needed.

Responsible for all functions that fall under the scope of care of a Primary Care Provider including predominantly clinical and administrative management, either directly or through delegated authority of the initial patient evaluation, and management of acute and chronic medical conditions in an outpatient setting such as:

  • Follow up care post treatment (consultation with other services as needed)
  • Research initiative opportunities
  • Optimizing patient safety and quality

Work Schedule: Full-time, Mon-Fri 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

Travel: You will be expected to travel for this position.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification

Additional Requirement: Must be board certified/board eligible
Preferred Experience: 3 Years' experience

Salary: $150,000 - $220,000 per year.

Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay)

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.
