Surgical Co-Management Clinical Faculty

The Division of Hospital Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine seeks candidates for a Clinical Educator Faculty position in the Surgical Co-management (SCM) Section. The SCM Hospitalist will provide collaborative care to surgical patients in the inpatient non-ICU setting in the Departments of Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, and ENT. The SCM hospitalist will be assigned to see surgical patients only and not be required to round on General Medicine services. The position is located at Stanford Health Care in Palo Alto, California.

About the Position
The SCM Hospitalist will work closely with the surgical teams to prevent and manage medical complications, optimize care coordination, improve patient experience, and achieve excellence in patient care, quality improvement, and research. The SCM Hospitalist will engage in advancing medical education for Medical Students, Internal Medicine house staff, Geriatric Medicine fellows, Physician Assistant students, Surgical house staff and Advanced Practice Providers, and Nursing staff.

Responsibilities

  • The surgical teams are responsible for History and Physical and Discharge Summaries and are the primary service on record. Most of the time, the first call regarding patient care will be directed to the surgical team.
  • Responsibilities include reviewing outpatient/transfer records, writing comprehensive notes, entering orders related to medical issues, and warm hand-offs and collaborative medical decision making with the inpatient and outpatient medical consultants and/or primary care provider.
  • ~175-200 Shifts a year for full-time faculty; no fixed 7-on/7-off schedule
  • Daytime shift hours: 8 am to 5 pm.
  • After-hour and night calls: From home, by the on-call SCM Hospitalist.
  • Weekends: One SCM Hospitalist rounds in the hospital on all the SCM services. A full-time SCM Hospitalist will cover approximately 9-12 weekends a year.
  • Approximate daily census per hospitalist: 10-12 on weekdays and 18-20 on weekends.
  • No bedside procedures are required by SCM Hospitalists unless they desire to perform them and are trained to do so.

Qualifications
SCM by hospitalists is an emerging field. Nocturnist Clinical Faculty
The Division of Hospital Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine is currently seeking a Nocturnist to join our hospitalist group. This is a full-time or part-time position. Clinical work will be located at Stanford Health Care (SHC) in Palo Alto, California. A full-time position is 12 shifts/month.

Responsibilities

  • Provide cross-coverage and admissions for several subspecialty services at night (no ICU coverage. Procedures are not required.)
  • Full-time positions: 12 shifts/month
  • 12-Hour shifts 7pm-7am (A private call room will be provided to the physician)

Stanford Health Care – Tri-Valley Open Positions
The Division of Hospital Medicine of Stanford University School of Medicine seeks candidates for Clinical Faculty positions as a General Medicine Hospitalist and Nocturnist at Stanford Healthcare – Tri-Valley (formerly ValleyCare) in Pleasanton, California. 

The Hospitalist and Nocturnist will join a growing practice in the fast-growing and family friendly Tri-Valley of the Bay Area. The Division seeks candidates with strong clinical skills, commitment to excellence in patient care and quality improvement, as well as a desire to advance medical education. This 167-bed hospital facility has a closed ICU with 24-hour coverage by in-house intensivists.

Nocturnist Clinical Faculty Position
The Nocturnist will cross-cover the Hospital Medicine Service (census around 70)

  • Admissions (average 8 admission a night), call appropriate consultants, distribute patients to day team and activate surge team as needed in the morning
  • Respond to Rapid Responses and Stroke Codes for all floor patients

General Medicine Hospitalist Position
The hospitalists manage teaching teams with advanced Stanford Internal Medicine Residency residents, teaching teams with Stanford physician assistant students, and non-teaching inpatient medicine teams. 

  • ~ 175-200 Shifts/ year
  • Admit and round on patients, average census 12-14 per team
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary rounds with Case Management and RN leads
  • Participate in QI projects
  • Actively participate in teaching Residents, PA Students, and RN staff
  • Opportunities for bedside procedures if desired, but not mandatory
