- NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi is the largest public hospital in the Bronx (500+ beds) and a Level 1 Trauma Center. Responsibilities:
- The SUV (Stand Up to Violence) is a gun violence prevention initiative run out of NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi. The SUV program is an evidence-based, violence reduction initiative that treats gun violence as a disease by identifying its causes and interrupting its transmission. The program hires a community outreach team of credible messengers - individuals who are hired from the communities in which they work and have backgrounds similar to those with whom they aim to connect - mentor the highest risk youth with an emphasis on conflict mediation and violence prevention.
- In order to prevent violence, methods and strategies associated with disease control are implemented:
Detecting and interrupting conflicts Outreach Workers (OW) identify and mediate conflict between high-risk individuals and groups in order to prevent violence and ongoing acts of retaliation.
Treating the highest-risk individuals The OWs mentor and support high-risk youth and young adults (ages 14 to 28) and connect them to educational, vocational, recreational and social services changing social norms
Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Director of Social Work and/or SUV Executive Director the Assistant Proram Director will
- Maintain communication with funders through regular phone calls, site visits, and quarterly reports in the absence of the Executive Program Director.
- Oversee the planning and implementation of program services and activities and is responsible for the day-to-day delivery of program content (specifically overseeing the employment and therapeutic implementations)
- Maintain regular communication with New York City Mayor's Office to Prevent Gun Violence and report all of the following in writing via email to the Office to Prevent Gun Violence:
- Staff vacancies and changes (i.e. extended leave of absence) Hiring panel schedule
- Final hiring
- Provide direct supervision for the Office to Prevent Gun Violence employment, conflict mediation and therapeutic implementation
- Provide assistance to the Community Program Manager with setting up hiring panels and ensuring compliance with internal and external policies and procedures.
- Oversee all mandatory program events including monthly therapeutic events, employment program orientation, conflict mediation monthly group trips (as required by funders)
- Culltivate and maintain relationships with the city and regulatory bodies as well as the work plus referral agency, schools, community organiza tions, hospital staff and other stakeholders
- Work appropriately and effectivel y with patients by providing trauma counseling, evaluate risk factors for violence, and assist outreach staff in preventing acts of violence
- Assist patient and families with any necessary support including medical appointments, legal services, after-school programs, housing programs, employment programs, safety planning, crime victims services etc
- Support and assist the Executive Program Director, as needed
Qualifications:
2-3 years' experience in a similar leadership role
NYS LMSW
Experience working with people who have experienced trauma, peer led work and/or in the criminal justice field
Is committed to continued professional growth
Preferred Qualifications:
In-hospital experience an advantage
A sense of humor and a love for working with at-risk youth
