JOB DESCRIPTION - Staff Physician (Cardiology)  

The Department of Veterans Affairs NY Harbor Healthcare System is seeking a full-time Non-Invasive Cardiologist at its Campus in Brooklyn, New York. The position requires outstanding clinical, teaching, and interpersonal skills. Responsibilities will include the provision of comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care to patients with Cardiovascular Diseases; the interpretation of stress tests, tilt table tests, echocardiograms, and electrocardiograms; and supervision of Cardiology Fellows and Internal Medicine Residents. Expertise to develop and engage in clinical research is highly desirable. In addition, the incumbent will have clinical responsibilities to the Medical Service, including preceptor to third year medical students and additional ad hoc clinical, teaching, and administrative assignments as may be required by the Chief of the Medical Service. The Brooklyn Campus of NYHHS is a major teaching affiliate of State University of New York Downstate Medical Center, and the successful candidate will be appointed at SUNY Downstate at an academic level commensurate his or her experience. The candidate must have completed three years of Internal Medicine training in an accredited program, as well as a fellowship in Cardiovascular Diseases.

Salary Range: $250,000 - $348,000 per year. Physicians will be paid commensurate with experience using VA's Market-based physician pay system. Education and length of practice will be considered through a formal pay-setting process in determining the final compensable salary.

EDRP: This position may be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application. Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Education: Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are a. Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted. b. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted. - For foreign medical graduates not covered in above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant.

Licensure: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.

Residency: Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:

  1. Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3)
  2.  Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
  3. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

Additional Requirement:
Board Certification in Internal Medicine, and Board Eligibility or Certification in Cardiovascular Diseases, Nuclear Cardiology, and Echocardiography are required.

Preferred Experience: Expertise in the interpretation of Cardiac CT and Cardiac MRI is desirable.

Physical Requirements: Physical Requirements: Physical activity includes sitting, standing (up to 2 hours), walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. See VA directive 5019.
