On behalf of Dr. Apostolos Tassiopoulos, Chair, Department of Surgery at Stony Brook Hospital, CareerPhysician, LLC, the leader in academic pediatric executive search, has initiated a national search to identify a transformational leader who will serve as Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief. We believe this to be an excellent opportunity for pediatric surgeons seeking leadership positions in the greater New York City metropolitan area.

The Chief will have the responsibility to advance the regional and national reputation of the comprehensive Pediatric Surgery platform and implement a vision that encompasses the mission and values of Stony Brook Children’s Hospital: Dedicated to delivering world-class, compassionate care to children while advancing the understanding of the origins of human health and disease and educating healthcare professionals and biomedical investigators of the future, so they can bring the fruits of scientific discovery to pediatric patients and their families.

Opportunity Highlights:

  • A legacy leadership opportunity to establish the vision and strategy that identifies the pathways for clinical growth by fostering relationships with community physicians, mentoring, growing faculty, and enhancing collaborative programs, such as trauma, fetal-maternal, and neonatal surgical care.
  • As Surgeon-in-Chief, promote collegial and collaborative working relationships between the surgical subspecialty services, anesthesiology, and nursing, while serving as the role model for quality and excellent outcomes, integrity, respect, commitment to diversity, and stewardship for Stony Brook Children's Surgical programs.
  • The new Chief will align and maintain reporting relationship with the Chair of Surgery for all surgical matter and hospital CEO for all matters related to facilities. Additionally, as Surgeon-in-Chief, the selected Chief will serve as a primary leader at the children’s hospital and work collaboratively with the Physician-in Chief to develop and carry out strategic plans for Stony Brook Children’s.
  • Stony Brook Children’s Hospital has 106 beds and is the only academic Pediatric Surgery program in Suffolk County (1.5 million population), housing a 46 bed Level III NICU and is serves as the only academic Level 1 trauma center for pediatric patients in the county.
  • The division of pediatric surgery is home to three physician faculty and provides opportunities to collaborate with clinical and basic science colleagues across the institution. In addition, the incoming Chief will steward the Cedric Priebe Lectureship Fund to sponsor annual Pediatric Surgery Grand Rounds as well as other endowments for recruitment and resources to carry out their vision.
  • The Institution is willing to support seasoned leaders or individuals seeking their initial Chief role with mentorship, coaching, and the fiscal resources necessary to recruit strong faculty.
