The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine at the Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) seeks an outstanding leader for its Division of Nephrology. The Division of Nephrology at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) has a long history and has been a global leader in clinical care, medical education, and research since Dr. Isidore Edelman was recruited to UCSF in 1954, when he established his laboratory at San Francisco General Hospital. In addition to pioneering work in fluid & electrolyte balance, Dr. Edelman trained many future nephrology leaders, including Frank Gotch, who later became the world’s expert in urea kinetics and dialysis adequacy. In 1967, the University of California Renal Center at San Francisco General Hospital opened its doors as the first dialysis center in Northern California. After several more dialysis centers opened in the region, the Renal Center provided hemodialysis to Californians who could not afford the treatments elsewhere. This on-campus dialysis center is now being expanded. Providing timely, high-quality nephrology care to individuals regardless of their socioeconomic status has remained central to the Division’s mission. Today, 6 faculty, 2 mid-level providers, and staff are dedicated to healthcare delivery, clinical innovation, and research that improve lives in San Francisco and diverse communities around the world. Current faculty and generations of trainees are renowned for leadership roles and service to the American Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation, NIH, academic journals, and both national and international learned societies.

Clinical services include nephrology inpatient consultation, acute and chronic dialysis care at ZSFG and other community centers, general nephrology clinic, advanced kidney disease clinic, and nephrology consultation and clinic for skilled nursing patients. The inpatient nephrology consult team cares for patients with diverse clinical disorders, including: acute kidney injury, severe electrolyte disturbances, acid-base disorders, hypertensive emergency, and acute glomerulonephritis. The team provides continuous renal replacement therapy to critically ill individuals. This team works closely with clinicians from other specialties to assist with inpatient workup and treatment and facilitates clinic appointments and the transition to chronic outpatient dialysis.

The Renal Center at ZSFG is the first dialysis center established in Northern California known as the “ward 17” outpatient dialysis unit. It provides world-class hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis services to underinsured residents of San Francisco. A multidisciplinary team of physicians, mid-level providers, nurses, technicians, dieticians, social workers, and administrators collaboratively provide personalized dialysis care to optimize individual well-being for approximately 125 individuals who live with kidney failure. A new on-campus expanded dialysis center is now under construction. The Nephrology faculty also care for another 175 individuals with renal failure who receive their renal replacement therapy at community dialysis centers across San Francisco.

The Division of Nephrology at ZSFG has a long-standing tradition of world-class clinical and research training activities as core faculty for the UCSF medicine residency program. All nephrologists hold faculty appointments in the UCSF School of Medicine and are members of the Academic Senate. In addition to working closely with Nephrology fellows (see below), they directly supervise medicine interns and junior residents who rotate on the inpatient nephrology consultation service and the outpatient nephrology clinics. Additionally, the Division of Nephrology at ZSFG is a major educational hub for students from the UCSF School of Medicine and comparable academic institutions who seek to transform the future of healthcare. During the Nephrology elective rotation (SOM 140.25), students enhance their understanding of renal physiology, acid-base and electrolyte disturbances, and etiology and management of acute kidney injury.

The Division is strongly committed to research. Research programs in hypertension, chronic kidney disease, hormone-regulated ion transport, dialysis, and implementation science are sponsored with support from NIH, foundations, and industry.

The Department of Medicine research programs at ZSFG receive over $100 million annually in funding. Research conducted at ZSFG has led to important breakthroughs in basic, clinical, and systems research. A new UCSF Research and Academic building is being built on the ZSFG campus where the division will be housed. The successful candidate will join the UCSF Department of Medicine (DOM) faculty and be included in the UCSF DOM compensation and benefits program.

We seek a Chief who has a demonstrated commitment to research, education, and clinical practice. The successful candidate must have the ability to lead a diverse group using a collaborative approach, demonstrated success in promoting or producing scholarship and funding, and a track record of mentoring young academic clinicians. Candidates must demonstrate exceptional leadership, administrative, and organizational skills and have national stature in nephrology. Board-certification in Nephrology is required. An understanding of and commitment to the safety net population is also crucial.
