Scope

The Associate Medical Director for Behavioral Health, Outpatient is a system-wide role reporting to the Senior Medical Director of Behavioral Health. While primary relationships include employed behavioral health prescribers and therapists who are providing Outpatient Specialty Behavioral Health services, this position is expected to collaborate, communicate, and build relationships with all members of the healthcare team, including affiliates as needed. The position operates in a dyad or triad leadership structure with key organizational relationships across Intermountain Healthcare with a specific focus on leading the performance, continuous improvement, and strategic direction of Behavioral Health Services.

Job Essentials

Maintains clinical responsibilities as a specialty outpatient behavioral health provider at least 0.5 FTE. Defines and establishes care models that best meet patient needs and our system Fundamentals of Care (quality, safety, equity, patient experience, access, stewardship, engaged caregivers, and smart growth). Ensures evidence-based clinical care standards are established and effectively implemented across Intermountain for appropriate caregivers. Champions outpatient behavioral healthcare system-wide, including Connect Care Behavioral Health Leads the physician recruitment process for outpatient providers. This may include leading the development of the annual physician recruitment plan in collaboration with BH Service Line Director and Senior Medical Director, involving all key stakeholders in the process, and ensuring access to information in a timely, efficient way, with appropriate coordination, documentation, and use of digital tools and technology. Provides clinical oversight of behavioral health prescribers who are employed by the medical group. Promotes adherence to care process models and evidence-based practices. Responsible to provide Intermountain clinical supervision for outpatient behavioral health psychiatrists. Partners with local site leads to ensure onboarding of new providers and provides necessary support to integrate into Intermountain. Collaborates with Behavioral Health Clinical Program leadership, clinic site leads, market AVP's, senior practice directors, clinic managers to meet established goals and objectives. Collaborates with team members in all clinic locations to ensure an understanding of roles and responsibilities. Regularly rounds at clinic locations and departments. Documents suggestions and ideas raised including actions taken and resolution. Regularly communicates with all locations to ensure all caregivers understand the goals and objectives of the services, are providing appropriate care and treatment and are delivering on our mission and fundamentals of care. Helps in supervising providers in Connect Care Behavioral Health Provides education to community members and behavioral health partners. Attends meetings and participates on committees as requested. Addresses performance concerns of providers working in outpatient specialty care. Serves as the system expert for peer review for outpatient cases and ensures a timely response to requests to evaluate care or concerns. Participates in the Behavioral Health Clinical Program strategic planning process. Helps develop annual goals and ensures goals and objectives are achieved. Supports appropriate research endeavors for outpatient care and collaborates with the Office of Research. Orients and educates new team members to ensure a clear understanding of care processes. Creates networking opportunities. Supports local innovation and scales good ideas across Intermountain. Provides specialty specific review or consultation as requested by SelectHealth. Provides specialty specific consultation as requested by Care Transformation/Information Systems. This physician is the model clinical leader for the Clinical Program for the model healthcare system as evidenced by:
  • Professional dress and presentations
  • Professional proposals and business plans
  • Integrity, passion, and energy for the clinical program work and a champion of Intermountain's mission, vision, and values
  • Effective implementation of Intermountain's operating model

Minimum Qualifications

M.D. or D.O. Education must be obtained through an ACGME or AOA accredited institution. Degree will be verified.

ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification in psychiatry and neurology.

Active Utah Medical Licensure, or in process of obtaining licensure.

Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.

At least three years of clinical experience in a behavioral health practice setting.

Three years of experience leading successful improvement in clinical settings.

Experience with change management with the ability to provide leadership in the adaptation and implementation of new processes and/or technology that enhance safety.
  • and -

Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Preferred Qualifications

Trained in improvement science (i.e., Six Sigma, Lean, Project management, Advanced Training Program).

Experience working in a complex health system (hospitals, ambulatory clinics, post-acute care, etc.).

Demonstrated leadership of clinicians.
