Position description

The Department of Family Medicine pursues a tripartite mission of innovative research, education, and clinical care in a highly diverse environment. The Department of Family Medicine and the School of Medicine at UC San Diego are committed to academic, scientific, and clinical excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body.

UC San Diego seeks candidates whose leadership capabilities and experience, teaching, research and community service have prepared them to contribute to our commitment to excellence. The successful candidate will be able to prioritize, grow, and support the current excellence in patient care; advance methods of medical education; and create opportunities to accelerate innovation and research. They will also identify additional recruits to help grow the scholarly activities of the department. As with similar roles, the Chair is expected to abide by UC San Diego's Guidelines for Department Chairs Duties, including in the areas of faculty recruitment, justice, equity, diversity, inclusion, wellness, service, and other policies and regulations. At the time of the new appointment, proposed candidates must show evidence of outstanding qualifications through letters of recommendation, teaching evaluations, and patient satisfaction assessments.

Qualifications Basic qualifications

  • Outstanding academic record academic medical center environment.
  • Dynamic leadership skills.
  • Personal record of distinguished clinical, scholarly, and/or research (basic and/or translational) accomplishments in the field of Family Medicine.
  • History of fostering career development for early and mid-stage faculty across multiple disciplines.
  • Qualify for appointment as a Full Professor at UC San Diego.
  • MD or DO degree by the time of appointment. MD and DO candidates must have completed an ACGME-certified Family Medicine residency training program and be board certified or board eligible in Family Medicine.
  • Candidates must have or be eligible for a California medical license as determined by the Medical Board of California.

Preferred qualifications

  • Leadership experience within an academic department, division, and/or professional society.
  • National or international prominence in the candidate's field of expertise.
  • Experience with fundraising and other philanthropic activities.
  • Demonstrated leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion.as well as a commitment to advancing these principles within the Department and the School
