Cleveland Clinic announces its search for a Director of Research for the Digestive Diseases and Surgery Institute (DDSI). The Research Director will serve as Vice Chair in DDSI and report directly to the Chair.

The DDSI Vice Chair of Research will be a nationally recognized physician leader in practice, research and education with impressive credentials. Duties and responsibilities of the Vice Chair will be to provide leadership for DDSI research, which will include oversight of research operations, organization, fiduciary matters, quality and safety, recruitment, retention and mentoring of researchers. A primary area of emphasis will be the expansion of DDSI clinical research and trials.

The ideal Vice Chair candidate will have a strong training pedigree, a track record of clinical excellence, possess superior communication skills and be committed to providing an exceptional patient experience. The successful candidate will be a nationally recognized biomedical researcher with a distinguished career of academic accomplishment. Candidates should be eligible for the rank of Associate Professor or Professor at Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Leadership style is of a servant leader with a record of excellence in clinical research, as well as significant experience in team and program development. Candidates will bring a collaborative style coupled with a commitment to elevate a top-ranked clinical research and trials program in one of the most vibrant academic institutions in the nation. The Vice Chair will demonstrate transparency, a deep sense of professionalism, commitment to diversity and inclusion in all of its forms, an unwavering ethical compass and strong support for interdisciplinary and inter-professional collaboration. The Vice Chair will be responsible for the extremely important academic and research mission of the Institute.

Digestive Diseases & Surgery Institute

DDSI consists of a wide-range of medical and surgical specialties at Main Campus and the Northeast Ohio region within its three Departments:
  • Colorectal Surgery: The Weiss Center for Hereditary Colon Polyps and Cancer, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Pelvic Floor Disorders, Ileal Pouch Program, Endoluminal Surgery, Young Onset Colon Cancer, Regenerative Medicine
  • General Surgery: Hepato-Pancreatico-Biliary Diseases and Surgical Oncology, Pediatric Surgery, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Institute, Medical and Surgical Breast, Gut Rehabilitation and Intestinal Transplantation, Abdominal Wall Reconstruction and Hernia, Surgical Endoscopy and Foregut, Acute Care Surgery and Trauma
  • Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition: Advanced Endoscopy, General Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Celiac disease, NeuroGastroenterology and Motility, Swallowing and Esophageal Disorders

  • DDSI employs more than 200 physicians and over 95 advanced practice providers. There are approximately 425 non-physician caregivers. DDSI provides care at Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, 22 family health centers, and 11 regional hospitals. The Institute partners closely with the Digestive Disease teams at Cleveland Clinic Florida, Abu Dhabi and London. In the past year, DDSIs volume consisted of approximately 158,000 patient visits, 51,000 surgical cases, 96,600 endoscopic procedures and 13,900 hospital admissions.

    The 20 DDSI training programs are of the most successful in the country; 11 surgery and 9 medicine programs with over 140 residents and fellows. DDSI faculty are involved in clinical research and innovative clinical trials. Our faculty also include those with basic and translational research programs in the Lerner Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic. The DDSI translational research areas of focus include: metabolism, fibrosis, epithelial biology, immunology and inflammation. Select faculty are part of the NCI designated Case Comprehensive Cancer Center.

    In 2020 U.S. News & World Report named Cleveland Clinic's DDSI 3rd in Gastroenterology and GI Surgery.
