The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Northwell Health seeks a qualified MD or MD, PhD physician, to serve as Vice Chair of Anatomic Pathology, a system-level position. Northwell Health is a 23-hospital system with over 800 ambulatory care facilities, serving the greater New York metropolitan area. The largest health system in New York State and 14th largest in the U.S., Northwell Health has over 6,000 hospital and long-term care beds, a workforce of over 72,000 employees, more than 12,000 member physicians, and numerous subspecialty programs. In addition to the in-system Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, Northwell Health has a strong affiliation with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, focusing on cancer research, including biospecimen science and clinical trials. In turn, the Northwell Health Cancer Institute cares for over 19,000 unique cancer patients per year, one of the largest cancer programs in the U.S. System-wide, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine accessions over 200,000 surgical pathology and over 150,000 cytopathology cases per year. The department employs approximately 110 pathologists system-wide, of whom 40 are in the central region subspecialty-based Anatomic Pathology Services unit serving Long Island Jewish Medical Center (583 beds) and the hospital-in-hospital Cohen Children’s Medical Center (202 beds), and North Shore University Hospital (783 beds), with the remaining pathologists in practices at the distributed tertiary and community hospitals of the network. The department is part of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine, founded in 2008 and with 400 medical students, and is home to Pathology Residency Training Programs for 32 pathology residents and 7 subspecialty fellowships.

This individual will provide senior oversight of Anatomic Pathology services at Northwell Health, through leadership in both subspecialty-based and community-based practice of Anatomic Pathology, and direction of system-wide quality management programs in Anatomic Pathology. This will involve working with the site-based pathologist directors and chairs of pathology and laboratory services who carry the direct responsibility for local operations. Through these leadership activities, this individual will help ensure delivery of the highest quality health care, and compliance with regulatory requirements of CAP, CLIA, the State of New York Department of Health, and other regulatory agencies as appropriate. This individual will be a senior member of the laboratory leadership and management of the Northwell Health Laboratory Service Line, for delivery of integrated laboratory services across the breadth of the 23-hospital health system.

This individual will provide visible and accessible leadership to the clinical programs and physician practice communities served by Northwell Health Anatomic Pathology services. A high level of experience and skill in a subspecialty area of Anatomic Pathology is expected, and this individual will practice Anatomic Pathology at an appropriate primary practice site, in accordance with clinical FTE needs and requisite duties of that site.

This individual will be a faculty member of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, with academic rank in accordance with qualifications. This individual will be expected to support the education of physicians-in-training at both the graduate and undergraduate level, and education of other medical professionals including technologists, supervisors, and managers. Direct reporting will be to the Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. 

Required qualifications include American Board of Pathology board certification in Anatomic Pathology (AP) or in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP); with subspecialty AP training and experience. The individual will be expected to have, or successfully obtain, a New York State license to practice medicine and to hold or be eligible for a New York State Certificate of Qualification in Histopathology. An academic background with demonstrated academic accomplishments is desirable.
