Job Description:
This position will serve as the Market Medical Director of Cardiology within Intermountain Medical Group for the Salt Lake Valley and Chair of Cardiology at Intermountain Medical Center.

The Role

She/He will be responsible for inpatient and outpatient services provided at Intermountain Medical Center and across the Salt Lake Valley (Central Market) including the Intermountain Heart Institute (IHI) and Department of Cardiology at Intermountain Medical Center (IMED). The role includes providing clinical and administrative leadership in the market for interventional and non-interventional cardiology, heart failure, electrophysiology, structural heart disease, echo, advanced imaging, and advanced practice clinicians working in cardiology. This position will partner and collaborate with other physician leaders at the Central Market hospitals and the Cardiovascular Service Line and Clinical Program to create a professional and positive environment for providers to do their work. This position will champion provider growth and development, access and experience, innovation, high-value, continuous improvement, and will be accountable to achieve hospital and system-wide cardiovascular related goals. In addition, the person in this position will promote excellence in the fundamentals of extraordinary care (safety, quality, patient experience, access, stewardship, engaged caregivers, equity and growth). Physician shall be employed as a member of the Intermountain Medical Group as a practicing cardiologist in the Intermountain Heart Institute-Salt Lake Valley.

The Market Medical Director of Cardiology is a geographic, market-based position with primary accountability for both inpatient and outpatient cardiology services. Employed cardiologists in the Central Market will report to this position. This position is also expected to collaborate, communicate, and build relationships with all members of the cardiovascular program and healthcare team including cardiologists, vascular surgeons, thoracic surgeons and CV surgeons. This position will directly report to the Senior Medical Director of Cardiovascular Service Line and indirectly to the hospital and Medical Group administration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain clinical responsibilities as a cardiologist
  • Employed Cardiologists within Central Market will report to this position
  • Lead cardiology services at IMED and across Salt Lake Valley (Alta View, LDS, Riverton,)
  • Work collaboratively with the Cardiovascular Service Line and Clinical Program, cardiovascular surgery and other cardiovascular physician leaders across the system
  • Lead and inspire a culture of success, collaboration, teamwork and dedication by all team members including physicians, APPs, nurses, technicians, and all staff members
  • Oversee and optimize all inpatient and outpatient cardiac services at IMED and CV services throughout the region including echo, EP, molecular imagine, EKG-based services, heart failure, adult congenital heart disease
  • Help develop, educate, and drive results for key performance metrics for safety, quality, patient experience, CMS metrics, documentation, and stewardship metrics including cost of care and utilization
  • Create and maintain accountable patient access schedules which meets the needs of the facility and market
  • Collaborate with other members of the Cardiovascular Service Line and Clinical Program team to develop care pathways for cardiovascular conditions
  • Help develop and implement privileging and maintenance of privileges criteria for cardiologists
  • Address performance concerns of cardiologist in concert with specialty care
  • Participate in peer review for cardiovascular cases and ensures a rapid response to requests to evaluate care or concerns
  • Participate in the Cardiovascular Service Line and Clinical Program strategic planning process. Help develop annual goals, and ensure goals and objectives are achieved.
  • Support appropriate research endeavors for cardiovascular services and collaborate with the Office of Research
  • Responsible to orient and onboard new team members of the facility
  • Help identify and work closely with the Cardiovascular Clinical Program Clinical Quality and Consistency Domain Leaders
  • Provide specialty specific review and/or consultation as requested by SelectHealth
  • Provide specialty specific consultation as requested by Care Transformation/Information Systems

Specific Roles and Responsibilities Include:
  • Monthly MEC and credentials committee meetings
  • Lead local Heart Institute and CV meetings
  • CV grand rounds
  • Ensure success of clinical quality meetings including echo, molecular, cath, M&M, TAVR, transplant, MCS
  • Oversee cardiology services and growth opportunities at AVH, LDSH, Riverton and in the Central Market scope
  • Encourage outreach and tele-cardiology efforts to expand services and influence beyond current geographic scope.

Experience Summary

  • Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Degree. Education must be obtained through and ACGME or AOA accredited institution, will be verified.
  • ABMS or equivalent AOA Board Certification in Cardiology or a Cardiology subspecialty
  • Active Utah Medical Licensure, or in process of obtaining licensure, is required
  • At least three years of clinical experience working as a cardiologist
  • Two years of experience leading successful improvement in clinical settings
  • Two years of progressive healthcare leadership experience
  • Experience with change management with the ability to provide leadership in the adaptation and implementation of new processes and/or technology that enhance safety
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ideal candidate can conduct professional presentations, proposals and business plans
  • Candidate has a professional appearance, integrity, passion, and energy for the Clinical Program work while being a champion of the Intermountain operating model
