The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is seeking an individual to lead a program focused on basic behavioral neuroscience in humans in the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases (DDEMD). The DDEMD supports and provides leadership for research on the causes, prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes and its complications, as well as other endocrine and metabolic diseases.

Current Opening

The NIDDK is seeking a basic behavioral neuroscientist with expertise in human research to develop and oversee a program focusing on identifying behavioral phenotypes and the underlying neural mechanisms or pathways that contribute to the etiology and pathophysiology of obesity and diabetes. The overall goal of this program is to enhance our understanding of heterogeneity in risk and response to treatment for obesity and diabetes and to inform us on how to individualize treatments to improve clinical outcomes.

The program officer position would involve the administrative oversight of grants and the development of new initiatives to understand the complex relationships between brain function, human behavior and metabolic outcomes related to obesity and diabetes.

The ideal candidate will have experience in conducting human studies that include measurements of behavioral and/or psychological factors as well as assessment of brain function in humans. The applicant should be able to integrate these findings into outcomes related to diabetes and obesity and have knowledge of the complex interactions among psychological, cognitive, biological, and environmental factors that drive behaviors.

The successful candidate will also work closely with other program officers with the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolic Diseases (DEM) as well as program officers in the Division of Digestive Diseases and Nutrition (DDN) and interact with the Office of Obesity Research.

The applicant must have a professional scientific degree (Ph.D or MD, MD/PhD), in a related field such as human neuroscience, psychology, cognitive, or behavioral sciences. Experience with obesity and/or diabetes outcomes would be viewed favorably. Research contributions to the field of human  behvioral neuroscience, scientific management, and research administration experience, as well as strong interpersonal and written communication skills are required.
