Job Description:
Provides leadership and strategic medical direction for Obstetrics within an Intermountain Healthcare hospital to advance performance in each of Intermountain Healthcare's Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care. This position will champion provider growth and development, innovation, continuous improvement, and will be accountable to achieve the system goals established by the Women's Health Clinical Program and OB/NEO operations lane.

The Medical Director for Obstetrics is a facility leadership role with system-wide participation expectations reporting to the Senior Medical Director of Obstetrics/Neonatal Operations and the Associate Medical Director of OB/GYN within the Women's Health Clinical Program with accountability for obstetric care within (specify facility). The Medical Director is responsible for several core areas;

1) Clinical leadership for the facility's obstetrics providers including obstetricians and CNMs

2) Management of clinical operations for obstetric practice within the facility

3) Partners with hospital NICU and pediatric leaders to optimize quality, safety, and operations of newborn care within the hospital

4) Partners with Obstetric/Neonatal Operations Neonatal Leadership to develop system-wide standards for obstetric care

5) Participates in system Women's Health OB/GYN development team and participates in system projects for creation of Labor and Delivery protocols, best practice, etc.

6) Tracks Key Process Indicators and metrics for system and hospital goals and reviews them frequently with providers to identify opportunities to improve care

7) Partner with hospital nursing leadership on Labor and delivery and Mother/Baby unit to implement protocols, initiatives and safety bundles

8) Participates in peer review, HEAT, RCA and Rapid Event Investigations regarding obstetrics complications and provides updates at Dept Mtgs re: lessons learned, updates, and protocol improvements

9) Addresses professional or performance concerns as indicated

10) Optimizes patient experiences on Labor and delivery and Mother/Baby Units and addresses patient concerns as needed

11) Educates obstetric providers practicing within the hospital about system-wide obstetric practice standards

12) Oversees the Hospitalist/Laborist programs at the hospital

13) Works together with Life Flight, nursing and Maternal Fetal Medicine leaders to optimize obstetric transports including implementation of best practices

The Medical Director works collaboratively with Obstetric, Gynecologic, Neonatology and Newborn leaders across Intermountain Healthcare including Specialty-Based Care (OB/Neo Operations), Clinical Programs, Clinical Services, Office of Patient Experience, Hospital Administration, Hospital CMO, Intermountain Medical Group and Select Health. Physician shall be credentialed and privileged on the medical staff of an Intermountain Hospital and will have a clinical practice. The Obstetric Medical Director reports to Senior Medical Director of Obstetric/Neonatal Operations and Associate Medical Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Job Essentials
  • Provide medical direction for all obstetric services within the hospital, emphasizing safety, quality, patient experience, access, stewardship, engaged caregivers, and smart growth.
  • Lead and inspire a culture of success, collaboration, teamwork and dedication by all team members including physicians, APP's, nurses, technicians and all staff members.
  • Participate in strategic development and growth of obstetric care programs and initiatives, focused on a holistic, integrated approach to clinical care.
  • Participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings as well as system-wide OB/GYN development Team and OB/GYN Department Meetings.
  • Implement best practices around staffing, Labor and Delivery and Mother/Baby operations, peer review, and quality improvement.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of evidence-based care processes and best-practices, team-based care, including use of APP's and telehealth to support value and risk-based payment models.
  • Communicate and educate local teams about system-wide initiatives including but not limited to evidence-based care processes.
  • Lead documentation and coding efforts; physician conversations, education, understanding.
  • Work in close partnership with leadership of hospital operations and OB/Neo Operations to optimize safety and quality and reduce variation in obstetric care in hospitals across the system.
    • Collaborate with unit leadership (manager, shared RN leaders) for Labor and Delivery and Mother/Baby quality assurance and clinical performance.
  • Work in close partnership with local hospital leadership in obstetrics, gynecology, neonatology, pediatrics, family medicine and emergency medicine to optimize quality and safety of newborn care within the hospital.
  • Address performance concerns for providers, including peer review.
  • Review and sign credentialing packets.
  • Address inappropriate or unprofessional behavior of direct reports.
  • Participate in system-wide OB/GYN peer review
  • Work in concert with administrative leadership to ensure regulatory and safety compliance in clinical activities.
  • Oversee related research initiatives in collaboration with Office of Research; evaluate most effective processes and treatments and publishes results.
  • Provide specialty specific review and/or consultation as requested by SelectHealth.
  • Provide specialty specific consultation as requested by Care Transformation/Information Systems.

Minimum Qualifications
  • M.D or D.O. with residency or fellowship training and Board Certification in obstetrics and gynecology or Maternal Fetal Medicine. Degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified.
  • Licensed or able to be licensed to practice Medicine in the State of Utah.
  • Holds active privileges or qualified to be credentialed at an Intermountain Hospital and SelectHealth.
  • Must be able to demonstrate effective leadership skills and the ability to work effectively and collegially with clinical and non-clinical staff to move others to action and model the vision and values of the organization.
  • 3-5 years of clinical experience with progressive leadership experience in obstetrics.
  • Exceptional verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated leadership of clinicians.
  • Experience delivering telehealth services

  • Interact with others requiring employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information.
