Starting date: 01.08.2022     Place: Lausanne, Switzerland

The Institute of Humanities in Medicine (IHM) aims to respond to the challenges posed by contemporary developments in medicine by drawing on the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences (the "humanities" in medicine): history of medicine and public health, social sciences, philosophy, ethics, and health law. Within the IHM, academic research and teaching in these fields are coordinated, major societal issues are debated in a dialogue with the community, and reflective and critical tools are developed to address future challenges.

Main missions:

  • Conduct and develop high-level academic research in the history of medicine, also financed by expert external funding and published in high-quality scientific journals, including its own research
  • Ensure and actively participate in pre-graduate (as required by the FBM), interdisciplinary post-graduate and continuing teaching in the field of history of medicine
  • Supervise and mentor young doctoral students in history of medicine and contribute to the PhD in the humanities and social sciences of medicine at the BMF
  • Manage the BHMS editions (Library of the History of Medicine and Public Health) attached to the IHM and collaborate with the IHM Library
  • Consolidate the influence of the academic field both internally and externally on a national and international level; within the framework of joint or transversal projects, collaborate with IHM researchers, other centers and institutions concerned, and the political or media world
  • Support the Director in the management of the Institute.

Desired profile:

  • Federal diploma in medicine or recognized equivalent title (Mebeko) and MD, MD-PhD or advanced degree in historical sciences and PhD in medical/health history
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in the medical and health field
  • Faculty-level knowledges and experience with proven practice in pre- and postgraduate teaching and research, including supervision of academic and administrative staff
  • Ability to set up research programs that can be supported by expert external funding
  • Experience in scientific publishing
  • Good knowledge of French (LM, B2 or C1), English, and German (a plus)
  • Preference will be given to a person with good communication skills, able to promote interdisciplinary collaboration with an open mind and demonstrating ethics, responsibility, and professional conduct in their daily work.

Further information can be obtained from the Dean, Prof. Manuel Pascual or Prof. Ralf Jox, designate Director of the IHM from 1 August, 2022.

Applications, written in English, will include a letter of motivation, a CV, a list of publications with copies of the three most significant publications, a list of external funding obtained, a brief description of the research program and teaching experience, a proposal for teaching and research at the IHM, and copies of degrees. They should be sent by 23 January 2022 (23:59 GMT+1) to: wwwfbm.unil.ch/releve/application/ as a single PDF file.

We offer a pleasant working atmosphere in a multicultural, diverse, and dynamic academic environment. There are possibilities for continuing professional education and a multitude of activities and other benefits to discover.
