The Faculty of Biology and Medicine (FBM) and the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) are inviting applications for a position of: 

Physician, Full Professor
Head of the Palliative and Supportive Care Service (SPL)

Starting date: 01.08.2023    Place: Lausanne, Switzerland

The Service, with approx. 65 collaborators, has the task of improving the quality of life of patients in palliative situations and their relatives. It comprises a dedicated inpatient unit, two interprofessional mobile teams (hospital consult team and home care team), and two outpatient clinics. It works in close collaboration with all clinical services at the CHUV except pediatrics. The service also comprises three professorial chairs – in geriatric palliative care, palliative nursing, and palliative psychology – with research and teaching responsibilities. Main research topics include the psycho-socio-existential determinants of quality of life, advance care planning in the elderly, the role of the relatives in assisted suicide, the role of the nursing profession in palliative care, and early identification of patients with palliative care needs. The service is also very involved in the teaching of palliative care for students of the FBM-UNIL, as well as for physicians in training, nurses, and other health care professionals.

Main tasks:
1. Directing, organizing, and ensuring the development of all the typical activities of a Clinical Service in a teaching hospital
2. Ensure and strengthen the expertise and security of clinical missions / services while developing inter-institutional collaborations and synergies in line with the CHUV's strategic plan
3. Conduct and develop high-level clinical and academic research missions, financed by expert external funds and published in quality scientific journals, including own research
4. Ensure and guarantee the teaching missions of pre-graduate (according to FBM needs), postgraduate (recognized center for the postgraduate training in palliative medicine) and continuing medical education in the field of palliative medicine, and actively participate in them
5. Consolidate the influence of the clinical and academic field both internally and externally.

Desired profile:

  • Swiss Federal medical degree (or equivalent Mebeko), MD or MD-PhD
  • ISFM-recognized subspecialty title (or equivalent) in palliative medicine
  • Extensive clinical experience in the field of tertiary level hospital palliative care
  • Widely recognized (or certified) managerial skills in leading a large / multi-site team and relevant experience in project management
  • Academic knowledge of faculty rank with proven practice in pre and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to set up clinical research programs likely to be supported by external expert funds
  • Good knowledge of French (LM or minimum B2, C1 ideal) or ability to acquire it quickly.
