Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital is searching for a dynamic, enthusiastic individual to lead the Department of Medicine. The Chief of Medicine provides administrative, clinical, and programmatic leadership for the hospital’s medical programs to ensure achievement of clinical goals and applicable performance measures. The Chief of Medicine is responsible for hands-on clinical work, oversight, and administration of all aspects of care by providers and trainees in primary care, inpatient medicine, and medical specialties. Broad oversight of Educational and Research programs in the Department are also required. In this role he/she will collaborate with all section chiefs and the heads of all other appropriate departments in the assessment of the medical care delivery system, as well as the development of plans for the delivery of care to Veterans consistent with the policies and guidelines of VHA. As a key member of the Hines leadership team, the Chief of Medicine will establish a climate within the Medicine Service that promotes optimal patient care and participate in top level decisions and policy design that impact Veterans.

The candidate must be Board Certified in a specialty member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties and have expertise in the analysis of available data and experience in the design of systems related to the provision of medical care. The successful candidate must have knowledge and experience with VHA policies, models, and procedures relating to Medical Care. The Chief of Medicine must have proven skills in developing and planning programs that solve problems and/or programmatic deficits. Experience in management of clinical, educational, and/or research programs is expected. The incumbent should have strong interpersonal skills that create positive interactions with Section Chiefs and frontline staff, proactive skills in providing the clinical interface between Hines and its academic affiliates, and collaborative skills with the university education programs including specialty programs.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) – OR –
  • (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), – OR –
  • (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Additional Requirements:

  • The candidate must be Board Certified in a specialty member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties and have expertise in the analysis of available data and experience in the design of systems related to the provision of medical care.
  • BLS and/or ACLS Certification

Preferred Experience:

  • In addition to experience and/or training in Medicine, candidate should have progressive administrative leadership experience for at least 7-10 years.

Education and length of practice will be considered through a formal pay-setting process in determining the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).
