The mission of the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Hospital is to lead in the quality of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, guided by compassion and a commitment to equity, and empowered by discovery, innovation, and education.  

Mount Sinai Health System has established the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Hospital in an ambitious effort to transform the care and treatment of cancer patients. We are building a $150 million state-of-the-art cancer hospital that is expected to be completed by 2025, with single-bedded rooms, plus a series of innovative clinical spaces and a roof garden park where family members and visitors can rest and recharge.  

We are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the new Surgical Director who will be responsible for operations and quality at The Mount Sinai Hospital on dedicated inpatient oncology units and for oncology patients on other inpatient units. The Medical and Surgical Directors of the Tisch Cancer Hospital will create seamless integration between inpatient oncology clinical care and the Tisch Cancer Institute research and teaching missions.

Surgical Director Job Description
Direct Reporting to:

  • MSH President for hospital affairs through the Director of Cancer Clinical Programs

Roles/Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  1. Responsible for creating a seamless integration between inpatient surgical oncology and the Tisch Cancer Institute and other applicable departmental research and teaching missions.
  2. Proposes and implements strategies to expand and improve the worldwide reputation of TCH and making it the top choice for patients undergoing cancer surgery.
  3. Collaborate with surgical departments in identifying important recruits on a national basis (across surgical specialties).
  4. Responsible for provider aspects of daily operations at The Mount Sinai Hospital for TCH surgical oncology inpatients.
  5. Interacts with the Medical Director of the TCH to further establish and enhance clinical care and the Tisch Cancer Institute’s research and teaching missions.
  6. Establishes criteria with Chief Medical Officer and responsible for continuous surgical oncology quality improvement metrics and other KPIs linked to advanced and compassionate surgical and procedural cancer care, including, but not limited to:
    1. LOS and excess days
    2. Hospital-acquired infections, including surgical site infections, CLABSI, and CAUTI
    3. Readmissions
    4. Inpatient cancer mortality
    5. Palliative care referrals and hospice utilization
    6. Other ranked oncology outcomes (e.g., discharge home)
  7. Responsible for inpatient clinical performance evaluations, coaching and mentoring of surgical oncology faculty in the TCH.
  8. Interacts with Perioperative leadership and Chief Resources Officer to coordinate optimal utilization of resources, including block time, perioperative capital planning, and expense management.
  9. Interacts with Chief Medical Officer to educate, monitor, and assure compliance with TCH surgical oncology pathways and guidelines.
  10. Interacts with leadership of Patient Experience to educate, monitor, and assure compliance with surgical and procedural patient experience initiatives within TCH.
  11. Interacts with Director of the Institute for Critical Care Medicine to enhance communication and coordination with intensivists providing care to surgical TCH patients.
  12. Coordinates development and philanthropic efforts of TCH related to surgical and procedural care, focusing on grateful patients and extramural sources of funding.
  13. Coordinates with Medical Director of TCH to align strategy and operations.
  14. Champions the rational transition of inpatient to ambulatory cancer surgery. Provides input into ambulatory surgery center strategy.
  15. Collaborates in the design and optimization of inpatient surgical unit care models for oncology patients.
  16. Participates in surgical oncology coordination with other Mount Sinai Health System hospitals and potential satellite locations.
  17. Reporting relationship to the relevant Departmental Chair for quality oversight of personally performed surgical practice.
  18. Serves as a liaison to the community to understand disparities in care and to promote equitable delivery of care.
