The mission of the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Hospital is to lead in the quality of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, guided by compassion and a commitment to equity, and empowered by discovery, innovation. and education.  

Mount Sinai Health System has established the Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Hospital in an ambitious effort to transform the care and treatment of cancer patients. We are building a $150 million state-of-the-art cancer hospital that is expected to be completed by 2025, with single-bedded rooms, plus a series of innovative clinical spaces and a roof garden park where family members and visitors can rest and recharge.  

We are seeking an exceptional leader to serve as the new Medical Director who will be responsible for operations and quality at The Mount Sinai Hospital on dedicated inpatient oncology units and for oncology patients on other inpatient units. The Medical Director of the Tisch Cancer Hospital will create seamless integration between inpatient oncology clinical care and the Tisch Cancer Institute research and teaching missions.

Medical Director Job Description
Direct Reporting to:

  • MSH Hospital President for hospital affairs through the Director of Cancer Clinical Programs
  • Division Director of Hematology/Oncology for faculty-related, research, and education of faculty and trainees

Roles/Responsibilities include but not limited to:

  1. Responsible for creating a seamless integration between inpatient oncology clinical care and the Tisch Cancer Institute’s research and teaching missions.
  2. Responsible for provider aspects of daily operations at The Mount Sinai Hospital oncology-dedicated inpatient units and for oncology patients on other inpatient units. This hospital within a hospital will provide cutting-edge cancer care for solid tumors and hematologic cancers. The Medical Director of the TCH will have overall responsibility for the delivery of word-class quality cancer medicine.
  3. Interacts with the Surgical Director of the TCH to further establish and enhance clinical care and the Tisch Cancer Institute’s research, and teaching missions.
  4. Provides oversight for the operations of the Oncology Care Unit.
  5. Establishes criteria with Chief Medical Officer and responsible for continuous quality improvement metrics and other KPIs linked to advanced and compassionate cancer care, including, but not limited to:
    1. LOS and excess days
    2. Hospital-acquired infections, including CLABSI and CAUTI
    3. Readmissions
    4. Inpatient ranked oncology outcomes (e.g., discharge home)
    5. Inpatient cancer mortality
    6. Hospice utilization
    7. Chemotherapy in the last 30 days of life.
  6. Coordinates and leads operational meetings to create and implement inpatient coverage models for oncology faculty, hospitalists, and advanced practice providers in the TCH.
  7. Responsible for inpatient clinical performance evaluations, coaching and mentoring of oncology faculty, hospitalists, and advanced practice providers in the TCH in partnership with their home departments.
  8. Interacts with Chief Resources Officer, Chief Pharmacy Officer, and the Chief Nursing Officer to coordinate optimal utilization of resources, including stewardship practices.
  9. Interacts with APP leaders (NP and PAs) to assure the highest level of integration and functioning of these providers in the inpatient services. 
  10. Interacts with Chief Medical Officer to educate, monitor, and assure compliance with TCH clinical pathways and guidelines.
  11. Interacts with leadership of Patient Experience to educate, monitor, and assure compliance with patient experience initiatives within TCH.
  12. Interacts with Director of Hospital Medicine to further establish and enhance operations of the Oncology Hospitalist Service.
  13. Interacts with Director of the Institute for Critical Care Medicine to enhance communication and coordination with intensivists providing care to TCH patients.
  14. Works collaboratively with ambulatory practices, ED, hospital at home, hospice, etc to optimize transition of care.
  15. Serves as a liaison to the community to understand unmet needs and to promote programs that enhance equitable delivery of care.
