The National Cancer Institute (NCI), Center for Cancer Research (CCR), Surgical Oncology Program (SOP) is seeking an outstanding, internationally known surgeon scientist to lead an independent research group developing novel therapies for treatment of patients with head and neck cancer.

Current surgeon scientists within the SOP focus on gastrointestinal and endocrine cancers. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join and enhance an existing, robust multidisciplinary and inter-institute head and neck cancer research program focused on the translation of novel targeted and immunotherapeutics from the laboratory into the clinic. Existing intramural expertise in surgical, medical, and radiation oncology as well as a broad referral network and a close relationship with regional academic centers afford the opportunity to build a robust clinical program. Leadership opportunities within the SOP and across the broader head and neck cancer research program are available.

The CCR is the largest component of the intramural biomedical research effort at NIH and is a major user of the NIH Clinical Research Center, a state-of-the-art research hospital on the Bethesda, Maryland campus. The CCR offers a tremendous depth and breadth of intellectual and technological resources, as well as opportunities for collaboration with investigators both within and outside of the NIH. The research environment is conducive to advancing translational research and highly collaborative, emphasizing multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team science. For an overview of CCR, please visit https://ccr.cancer.gov/

The successful candidate will be eligible to be appointed as a tenured NIH Senior Investigator and will lead his/her own individual world-class research program, supported by generous stable resources, including access to a wide range of NCI technology platforms and interdisciplinary collaborations within NCI as well as at NIH and its Clinical Center.

The selected candidate must have a MD, DO, or equivalent degree with board-eligibility or certification in otolaryngology and have a translational research program encompassing head and neck cancer biology and therapeutics. This is a full-time government position in Bethesda, Maryland. Individuals who apply must be U.S. citizens. The application period will begin on November 3, 2021, and end on November 13, 2021.
