About Rhode Island

Rhode Island is known as the Ocean State given its nearly 400 miles of coastline. Although only 1,545 square miles, RI has 15 state parks and 10 state beaches along with several other scenic lakes, rivers, walking areas and hiking trails.

Providence, the state’s capital, combines the accessibility and friendliness of a small town with abundant cultural, recreational, and the modern amenities of a big city. Providence is home to a number of higher education institutions including Brown University, Johnson & Wales, Providence College, and the Rhode Island School of Design, sprawling historic Roger Williams Park, landscaped Waterplace Park and Riverwalk, with the famous WaterFire exhibit.

Beyond Providence, RI is also home to several other large cities, including Newport, famed for sailing, the Gilded Age mansions, and the Cliff Walks; Bristol, known for Colt State Park that sits along one of the state’s shorelines; Block Island, infamous for the 1800s red-brick Southeast Lighthouse that sits atop Mohegan Bluffs, with a rocky beach below; the third largest city Warwick, located in southern RI, is close to the beaches and home to the state’s main airport, as well as, Goddard Park, Oakland Beach, and Pawtuxet Village with shopping and dining options.

Rhode Island is one hour from Boston, Hartford, and New Haven, and three hours from NY City.
