VA Boston Healthcare System is seeking a Primary Care Physician at several VA Boston sites.

VA Primary Care Physicians manage a complex panel of patients in collaborative teams. Panel sizes are approximately 1,250 patients per full-time physician and appointment lengths are 60 minutes for new patients and 30 minutes for all other appointments.  Telephone and video care are encouraged.  Each physician is assigned a registered nurse, clinical associate, and scheduler. There is no call, and no weekend or holiday duty.

Physicians provide general and gender-specific care to both men and women Veterans that range in age from 18 through the geriatric years. For all positions in Primary Care Service, candidates will possess the ability to provide general primary care to women veterans. The physician serves as collaborating physician for nurse practitioner/physician assistants.

The VA utilizes a national electronic medical record and is known for delivering high quality, evidence-based care within a culture of continuous improvement. The Primary Care Service at VA Boston Healthcare System is leading the VHA’s initiative in the Whole Health System of care which includes conventional treatment but also focuses on self-empowerment, self-healing, and self-care. The Whole Health System approach is informed by evidence-based research and makes use of all appropriate therapeutic approaches and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing.

VA Boston Healthcare System offers teaching opportunities for both medical students and medical residents in the inpatient and outpatient arenas. A faculty appointment at an appropriate rank may be offered based on involvement in teaching. Academic accomplishments should be commensurate with academic appointment at the Instructor or Assistant Professor level at Harvard Medical School or Boston University School of Medicine.

Brockton campus: A full-time position on a lovely campus offering many services including urgent care, radiology, short-term rehabilitation, palliative and hospice care, long-term care, a chronic Spinal Cord Injury unit, mental health services, and an outpatient Women’s Health Center, located 25 miles south of Boston. It is the largest VA Boston Primary Care practice with integrated nursing staff, behavioral health, clinical pharmacists, dieticians, social workers, and peer partners.

Jamaica Plain campus: A full-time position in a large Primary Care group in Boston which is accessible by the MBTA Green line. This facility has many specialty services, as well as mental health, radiology, and urgent care. Teaching is an important part of this practice, and resident clinics are held with residents from Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, and Boston Medical Center.

Lowell Community Based Outpatient Clinic: A part-time position located in a modern one-story facility 30 miles north of Boston which provides service to Veterans North of Boston and into New Hampshire. A shuttle service is available between the clinic and the Jamaica Plain Campus. This is a larger CBOC with services offered including Mental health, Optometry, Neurology, Podiatry, Nutrition, and laboratory services.

West Roxbury campus: A full-time position in a state-of-the-art office area recently built for Primary Care. This facility is a full-service hospital which includes the inpatient medical and surgical services and all specialty services. Teaching is an important part of this practice, and resident clinics are held with residents from Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center, and Boston Medical Center.

Quincy Community Based Outpatient Clinic: Located in a coastal community on the Boston beltway, just 8 miles from downtown Boston, which provides service to many Veterans on the South Shore. It is one of the smaller CBOCs with a cohesive and supportive staff. The site is accessible by public transportation on the MBTA Red line.

Requirements: U.S. Citizenship and a full, unrestricted license. A Massachusetts license is expected on effective date of hire due to certain State requirements. Board Certification in Internal Medicine or Family Practice.

These positions are eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) in accordance with program rules and regulations. This a student loan reimbursement up to $200,000 over 5 years.

Federal Retirement Plan:

  • VA employees are covered by the Federal Employees Retirement System (FERS).
  • This includes a plan similar to the 401(k) savings plans widely available in the private sector that allows employees to tax defer a portion of their income each year, subject to the requirements of the Internal Revenue Service.
  • The Federal Government also provides an automatic basic contribution (1% of salary) and up to 4% of salary in matching contributions, depending on the amount of the employee contribution
  • For retired military personnel, these benefits are in addition to full monthly retirement pay or pension
  • In addition to FERS, VA provides health care insurance coverage for retired personnel
  • Disability Retirement
  • Employees are vested in a federal pension after only 5 years' service
