Houston Methodist seeks a nationally recognized extramurally funded physician-investigator to serve as Chair of the Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology. Houston Methodist has identified neurosciences as a key pillar in the future of the health system and is committed to becoming a top-10 department of neurology, nationally. To achieve this vision, a significant resource commitment including a generous academic package will be made available to the successful Chair candidate.

The chair and department faculty maintain academic appointments with Houston Methodist’s primary academic affiliate, Weill Cornell Medical College, which is ranked among the top 20 medical schools in the country.

Houston Methodist is an 8-hospital system, which includes flagship Houston Methodist Hospital – a 1,300-bed academic medical center and the #1 hospital in Texas according to U.S. News & World Report. The Neurological Institute at Houston Methodist is currently ranked #23 in US News and World Report for neurology and neurological surgery, located in the Paula and Joseph ‘Rusty’ Walter III Tower, a 22-story, $700 million patient tower. The Houston Methodist Research Institute is home to more than 550 faculty and members who work with more than 1,500 credentialed investigators at Houston Methodist and a network of more than 62,000 coauthors around the world.

The Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology includes 28 faculty neurologists, two neuropsychologists, and seven research faculty. The department offers a four-year accredited adult neurology residency program, with six residents per year. Additionally, the department offers clinical fellowships in neuroimaging, neuromuscular medicine, neurophysiology, and vascular neurology. This role would come with an academic appointment at Weill Cornell Medical College commensurate with the background and experience of the new Chair.

Houston Methodist is seeking a physician investigator with the knowledge, vision, and leadership abilities to serve as the Chair for the Stanley H. Appel Department of Neurology. This role leads the academic Department of Neurology at Houston Methodist Hospital, with responsibility for advancement of clinical, education, and research missions. Education (undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education) and research programs are conducted as components of the Houston Methodist Academic Institute. The Chair serves as the Chief of the Neurology service at Houston Methodist Hospital, with responsibility for development of neurology clinical programs and operations, quality initiatives, and medical staff chief duties including oversight of clinical performance and professional matters of all neurologists.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding clinician and will have experience in leading and participating in significant research programs, advancing a superb record of scholarly activity, and a record of mentoring students, residents, fellows, and faculty toward clinical and research success. She or he will balance a commitment to the education, patient care, and research missions, and bring a commitment to expand the national visibility and prestige of the department. Qualified candidates will be eligible for primary faculty appointments at Weill Cornell Medical College and the Houston Methodist Academic Institute. Secondary faculty appointments at Texas A&M College of Medicine and other medical school affiliates also are possible. Current faculty participate in teaching residents in Houston Methodist’s 42 ACGME-accredited training programs.

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO with certification through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
  • Eligibility for an unrestricted medical license in TX.
  • Strong track record of funded research activities and scholarly achievements.
  • Outstanding clinical skills and a national reputation in the field.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and presentation skills for both clinical and non-clinical audiences, in group settings or one-on-one.
  • Experience as an academic leader.
