New York City, New York

Position Type

Northwell Health is seeking a transformational leader who can build on existing clinical, educational, and research strengths in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital. The new leader must be a highly accomplished and academically productive pathologist with exceptional communication, interpersonal and change management skills, and a strong commitment to upholding our core values - including promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Northwell Health, New York State’s largest private employer and one of the nation’s largest integrated health care systems, delivers world-class clinical care throughout the New York metropolitan area, pioneering research at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, and is educating the next generation of medical professionals through the visionary Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

Lenox Hill Hospital is Northwell’s flagship hospital in Manhattan, and is dedicated to providing outstanding health care with compassion and respect, promoting wellness within the communities it serves, and advancing the field of medicine through education and research. This 450-bed acute care hospital located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has been caring for patients in the New York area and beyond since 1857 and has been recognized for high performance in several specialties according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2020-21 Best Hospitals rankings. Lenox Hill Hospital was the fourth-ranked medical center in the state and achieved top-50 national ratings in seven medical specialties. These rankings come in the wake of a pandemic in which New York State was particularly hard hit and during which Lenox Hill Hospital assisted Northwell in treating more COVID patients than any other health system in the nation. Lenox Hill Hospital has also been awarded Magnet Recognition® status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and has been designated a “Leader in LGBTQ Healthcare Equality” by the Human Rights Campaign, and nationally recognized by Diversity, Inc. as a top hospital and health system.

The Pathology Department serves the main campus of Lenox Hill Hospital (LHH), as well as Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH) on Manhattan’s Upper East Side and Lenox Health Greenwich Village, an emergency and ambulatory care facility located in Greenwich Village in lower Manhattan. LHH has a well-established ACGME-accredited pathology training program with 8 residents and one surgical pathology fellow. LHH’s pathology service handles approximately 1,000,000 clinical laboratory specimens, 25,000 surgical cases, and 15,000 cytology cases annually, and has a growing surgical and cytopathology outreach program.

Spanning the top two floors of the hospital, LHH’s laboratory services include anatomic and clinical pathology labs, research labs, and a blood bank. Over-and-above providing outstanding patient care to the LHH clinical practice community, The Medical Laboratory Observer (MLO) named LHH “Lab of the Year” for 2020. LHH’s laboratory excelled in the criteria that the MLO editorial advisory board judged the nominees on, which are customer service, productivity, teamwork, education and training, strategic outlook, and lab inspections.

LHH Pathology and laboratory services are part of the Northwell Health System’s Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Northwell Laboratory Service Line. For both professional and technical operations, there is strong integrative and infrastructural support for each pathology and laboratory services practice site in the health system.

Northwell Health seeks an exceptional clinician leader with proven skills and values to lead this highly successful clinical enterprise. The Chair of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital will work collaboratively with residents, fellows, and physicians and with other hospital and health system leadership and staff to ensure the delivery of effective, efficient, quality patient care.
