Job Description:
Provides leadership and strategic medical direction for Obstetrics (OB) and Gynecology (GYN) within Intermountain Healthcare to advance performance in each of Intermountain Healthcare's Fundamentals of Extraordinary Care. This position champions provider growth and development, innovation, continuous improvement, and is accountable to achieve system-wide OB/GYN-related system goals.

Scope

The Medical Director for OB/GYN is a system-wide leadership role reporting to the Chair/Senior Medical Director of Women's Health with overall accountability for obstetrical care across the system, including general obstetrics, maternal fetal medicine, laborists, CNMs and APPs. The OB/GYN Medical Director will be responsible for working closely with FM leadership and providers for all pregnancy-related care. The Medical Director is responsible for several core areas: 1) Clinical leadership for the system's obstetrics clinicians. 2) Strategic leadership and overall management of clinical operations for obstetrics. 3) Partnering with specialty-based care and the hospital obstetric operational leaders to optimize the quality, safety, and operations of labor and delivery and newborn care within hospitals.
The Medical Director works collaboratively with senior leaders across Intermountain Healthcare including Community-Based Care, Specialty-Based Care, Clinical Programs, Clinical Services, Office of Patient Experience, Intermountain Medical Group, and SelectHealth. Physician shall be credentialed and privileged on the medical staff of one of more Intermountain hospitals and will have a clinical practice spending approximately 50% of their time on administrative duties and the remainder of their time providing clinical care.
Direct reports include the Associate Medical Director for inpatient obstetrics (antepartum, triage, L & D, postpartum). Reports to the Chair/SMD of Women's Health.

Job Essentials

Provide medical direction for all OB/GYN services, emphasizing safety, quality, patient experience, access, stewardship, engaged caregivers, and smart growth.
Lead and inspire a culture of success, collaboration, teamwork, and dedication by all team members including physicians, APP's, nurses, technicians, and all staff members.
Guide strategic development and growth of obstetrics care programs and initiatives, focused on a holistic, integrated approach to clinical care.
Implement best practices around staffing, clinic operations, compensation, peer review, and quality improvement.
Lead the development and implementation of evidence-based care processes and best-practices, team-based care, and compensation models, including use of APP's virtual care and integrated behavioral health, to support value and risk-based payment models.
Work in close partnership with leadership of hospital operations to optimize safety and quality and reduce variation in care in hospitals across the system.
Define the physician recruitment needs for obstetrics for the system, including developing annual physician recruitment plan in collaboration with planning, Community-Based Care, Specialty-Based Care, and the Medical Group.
Address performance concerns for providers, including peer review.
Support annual strategic planning process for OB/GYN care in collaboration with the Chair/SMD and Executive Clinical Director, ensuring that annual goals and key performance metrics are established. Ensures goals set by the organization are achieved and maintained.
Mentor associate medical directors, provides leadership development, and guides team in effectively leading and managing pre-pregnancy, interpregnancy, and post-partum healthcare. Connects the patient experience across the care continuum.
Advocate for the evolving issues in the specialty of OB/GYN and the overall improvement of women's health including barriers to access, community education, and collaborations with community resources.
Define system-wide standardization of equipment, supplies, and protocols for OB care; prioritize and balance demands on Information Systems and other 'enabler' support service resources; review and refine generic report sets; share ideas and ensures coordination between clinics, hospitals, and OB providers across the system.
Support operational effectiveness through collaboration with clinical program Executive Clinical Director, maintain awareness of financial implications of clinical program initiatives, recommends capital expenditures for facilities, and participates in medical expense budget and partners with Medical Group, SBC and CBC operations to set budgets and optimize operating and financial performance. Ensures achievement of OB/GYN system-wide physician stewardship goal targets.
Work with Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee to achieve best practice and prices for medication.
Work in concert with administrative leadership to ensure regulatory and safety compliance in clinical activities.
Oversee related research initiatives in collaboration with Office of Research. Evaluates most effective processes and treatments and publishes results.
Collaborate effectively with national and international partners and organizations to support and enhance Intermountain's reputation and influence.
Provide specialty specific review and/or consultation as requested by SelectHealth.
Provide specialty specific consultation as requested by Care Transformation/Information Systems.

Minimum Qualifications

M.D. or D.O. with residency or fellowship training and Board Certification in Obstetrics or Gynecology. Education must be obtained through an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.

Licensed or able to be licensed to practice Medicine in the State of Utah.

Holds active privileges or qualified to be credentialed at an Intermountain Hospital and SelectHealth.

Three to five years of progressive leadership experience in a health care delivery system or multi-specialty Medical Group.

Medical staff leadership experience.
