This position is located at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center in the Department of Medicine, Gastroenterology Services, Endoscopy Lab, Fort Hood, TX.

Fort Hood rests in the beautiful hill and lake country of Central Texas approximately 60 miles north of Austin and 50 miles south of Waco. Medical malpractice liability insurance is not required for federal civilian healthcare providers as they are covered by the Federal Tort Claims Act (28 U.S.C. § 1346(b)) while acting within the scope of their employment.

Assigned as the Medical Director of Pulmonary Disease Services and Respiratory Therapy. Serves as a board certified physician in pulmonary disease and responsible for the examination, diagnosis and treatment of the full range of outpatients seen in the clinic.

Responsibilities

The incumbent is required to coordinate the work of the total operation of the Pulmonary section. The incumbent must integrate the needs of the different clinics, as well as integrate the needs of the Department with other organizations within the Medical Center. Decisions required at this supervisory level have a direct, major impact on the sections making up the Department. Recommendations include issues which certainly affect the department, and may have a direct impact on the entire CRDAMC. These may be recommendations affecting the organizational structure, resources, program effectiveness, policies, goals, etc. of the CRDAMC. The nature of the work is complex and significant enough that the level of coordination and integration of department involves professional work that has a direct and substantial effect on the organizations and pulmonology services provided. Decisions required at this supervisory level have a direct, major impact on the pulmonology section. Recommendations include issues which certainly affect the Department, and may have a direct impact on the entire hospital, program effectiveness,
policies, goals, etc. of the hospital.

Outpatient Clinic: The incumbent performs a wide range of medical duties covering all
aspects of disorders involving pulmonary diseases to include the diagnosis, treatment and
management of patients within the full range of pulmonary disorders. Responsibilities may
include prescription renewal for pulmonary outpatients, telephone consultative services,
interpretation of pulmonary function testing, performance of bronchoscopy and exercise
testing and interfacing with referring providers from outlying clinics. Periodically provides
episodic care to clinic patients on a walk-in basis. All clinical encounters will be
documented in the facility's electronic medical record. A full working knowledge of
electronic data retrieval within the Defense Healthcare Agency medical systems.

In an inpatient setting, serves as the day attending physician for the Intensive Care Unit
or as the on-call Intensive Care Unit attending. In that capacity, provides the full range of
critical care services for critically ill medical and surgical patients admitted to that service.
Oversees, teaches, and provides consultation to other health care providers (nurse
practitioners, physician assistants, medical students, interns, and residents). The
incumbent has hospital admitting privileges. Additionally, gives lectures on Pulmonary,
Critical Care or Sleep Medicine topics to residents, medical students, fellow staff members
and other hospital staff.
May serve at all levels of an oversight capacity on the Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep
Medicine Service, as the needs of the service dictate, and with the approval of the Chief,
Department of Medicine. This may include service as the Chief of the entire service or the
Medical Director of any one of the components of the service (e.g. Pulmonary Disease
Clinic, Pulmonary Function Laboratory, Sleep Disorders Clinic, Respiratory Therapy, etc).

Qualifications

Board Certified Required

Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicants graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in an institution accredited for such training.

Licensure/Certification: Candidates must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a State, District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Specialized Experience: Candidates must clearly demonstrate in their resume that they possess, at a minimum, 3, 4 or 5 years of internship/residency/fellowship training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training in the specialty. The required experience/training will include skills such as, but not limited to, a wide range of patient care duties including examination, diagnosis and treatment to ensure effectiveness of treatment, post discharge. At least one of the experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level, which would involve independent treatment of complex cases requiring advanced skills.
