Proven leadership and excellence in clinical care, education, research, and administrative experience are required. Candidates must have a Doctorate of Medicine (or equivalent) and be board-certified in Pediatric Cardiology. Candidates must also have or be eligible for a North Carolina medical license.

Priorities for the Division Chief of Cardiology include developing innovative patient programs, mentoring trainees--including medical students, residents and fellows--and enhancing research programs. The division currently includes 19 faculty and is a primary provider of cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment services in the southeastern United States. The faculty offer a comprehensive spectrum of clinical services to treat cardiovascular diseases that affect the fetus, infant, child, adolescent, or young adult on the inpatient wards and in daily outpatient clinics at Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center, Duke Children's Specialty Services of Fayetteville, Duke Children's Specialty Services of Greensboro, Duke Children's Specialty Services of Raleigh, and Duke Children's of Apex. Our clinical staff includes nurse practitioners, nurse clinicians, echocardiography and catheterization lab technicians, physician assistants, and a transplant coordinator.

Our faculty and fellows actively collaborate with members of the 16-bed Pediatric Cardiology Intensive Care Unit (PCICU), as well as members in Pediatric Anesthesia and Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Duke Pediatric and Congenital Heart Center. We have a rapidly growing cardiac surgery program with 3 dedicated pediatric heart surgeons with excellent outcomes (3 star rating by the Society of Thoracic Surgery Congenital Heart Disease Study). We also collaborate with Duke Maternal Fetal Medicine as well as pediatric specialists in neurology, gastroenterology, genetics, physical and occupational therapy, and behavioral health, among other areas to provide the highest quality of care possible. We offer the full spectrum of cardiovascular care services, including interventional and non-interventional cardiac catheterization, non-invasive cardiac imaging, electrophysiology, fetal cardiology, adult congenital cardiology, cardiovascular genetics, preventive cardiology, and heart failure and transplant.

Physician training at the resident and medical student levels is an integral and essential component of the division's mission, and our faculty physicians share a common commitment to teaching. We have a robust three-year fellowship program that is accredited by the American Board of Pediatrics, Sub-board of Pediatric Cardiology as well as several advanced fourth year fellowships. Our educational goals are to train future physician-scientists and academic leaders in congenital and acquired heart disease, fund young researchers working in basic science and patient-oriented research, and train physicians in family-based, patient-centered clinical services.

The Division of Cardiology has a dynamic and preeminent research program that encompasses a wide range of basic, translational, clinical, implementation, and quality improvement science funded by the NIH, foundations, and industry sponsors. The Division's specific areas of research include genetic and molecular mechanisms of channelopathies and cardiomyopathies, clinical outcomes studies, and clinical trials in drugs and devices in children with congenital heart disease. The expertise and state-of-the-art resources available for research in pediatric cardiology at Duke are extensive. Our division faculty are integrated into major research efforts across the institution including the Duke Clinical Research Institute and Duke Cardiovascular Research Center leading to the development of the latest treatment innovations and prevention strategies.
