The Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) invites applications and candidate nominations for the role of Chief, Minimally Invasive & Bariatric Surgery. This is an exciting opportunity to join one of Philadelphia’s leading academic medical centers which is home to more than 1,000 physicians and scientists who share the mission of bringing innovative treatments to patients. Preference will be given to accomplished surgeons who have demonstrated by earlier accomplishments an ability to define a vision that maximizes performance in all phases of Temple’s tripartite mission. Temple physicians are among the most respected and diverse group of healthcare providers in the region. This unique role will provide you an opportunity to continue the history and mission of the LKSOM while educating physicians for the future of quality patient care.   

Reporting to the Chair of Surgery of LKSOM, the Chief will be responsible for the overall operations of the Division of Minimally Invasive & Bariatric Surgery. Focusing on areas that include, but not limited to program development, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, educational activities, research, and technical/surgical advancement. The Chief will orchestrate strategies to ensure the Division grows in line with Temple Health’s overall mission and goals. Additionally, the Chief will identify key internal and external strategic relationships, including philanthropic to support the Division’s future needs. 

The incoming Chief will join a large, academic practice in the Department of Surgery at Temple University Hospital (TUH) Main Campus and Jeanes Campus. The ideal candidate will promote the department’s culture of collegiality and teamwork while leading, managing, and developing the division to ensure it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence in all its activities across the system. Candidates must have a documented record of academic accomplishments, strong interest in clinical research and medical education, and be knowledgeable on external trends and opportunities. Successful candidates must have clinical expertise in minimally invasive surgical procedures, robotic surgery, Roux-en-Y and Gastric sleeve surgery, patient surgical planning, and post-op care management. Candidates will have experience managing a multi-disciplinary team and ability to oversee an accreditation survey process within an ASMBS or MBSAQIP accredited program. It is strongly preferred that the new chief will have proven leadership in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a commitment to advancing these principles within the division and the school. 

Candidates must possess an MD with active board certification in General Surgery and completed an accredited fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. Credentials that qualify for a faculty appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor level is preferred. Candidates should be active participants in national organizations and committees such as those of the ACS, ASMBS, SAGES, and be eligible for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. All candidates must have the ability to lead and work cooperatively within a diverse environment.
