Cleveland Clinics Center for Bioethics is seeking an individual to join the Professional Staff (equivalent to Faculty) who will have responsibilities that include specific ethics leadership at several regional hospitals as well as responsibilities within the Center. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence and enthusiasm for providing high quality clinical ethics consultation and innovation in program building. The candidate should have a proven track record in both academic and clinical practice settings, as well as experience developing quality initiatives surrounding clinical ethics. This individual needs to work effectively and collegially with members of the public, intra-professional clinical teams, leadership, and other personnel. This position reports to the Director of the Center for Bioethics. The candidate will be eligible for appointment in the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University and will have opportunity to engage in a robust Bioethics Community.

Candidates for the position must have an advanced degree in Bioethics or related field, and have a minimum of 3 years of clinical ethics experience in a healthcare setting.

The successful candidates will have demonstrated program development experience with intra-professional teams as well as experience teaching and educating adult learners. The candidate will also be expected to collaborate in a rich multidisciplinary Bioethics Center that engages in cutting edge research and programming.

Qualifications:

Minimum of a terminal professional degree (PhD, JD, MD/DO, or equivalent) in a bioethics related field with advanced training in Bioethics. Formal fellowship training in clinical ethics is preferred.

Experience with, (1) working in clinical environments; (2) providing quality clinical ethics consultation with competencies at an advanced level; and (3) service on and successful support of the activities of ethics committee(s) (4) A proven track record of academic achievement. Preference given to individuals with at least 3 years of experience in these areas with substantial volume of experience in performing ethics consultations.

Effective oral and written communication skills.

Proficiency with distance learning/communication and related technology (e.g., for teleconferences, webinars).

Experience and excellence in education, mentoring trainees, and curriculum design.

Demonstrated relationship-centered collaboration and team-building skills.

Responsibilities:

An ethics consultant will:

Collaborate with staff ethicists in providing clinical ethics consultation within a balance of both independence and supervision (depending on consult complexity) across the Northeast Ohio Cleveland Clinic Enterprise.

Contribute to clinical ethics educational activities for clinicians and clinical trainees.

Maintain timely and complete documentation of clinical ethics consultations.

Assist with hospital ethics committees activities and responsibilities.

Contribute to evaluative and quality improvement initiatives and processes related to ethics consultation and educational efforts.

Participate actively in hospital-specific multidisciplinary rounds, with anticipated triage of more complex issues and questions to a regional ethicist.

Act as a liaison with clinical staff to promote and enhance clinical ethics programs and services.
