Experience a satisfying and medically challenging practice for physicians looking for more acuity than office-based medicine and without the work/life stresses of night shifts.

The CDU: The Geisinger Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) is an outpatient observation unit specifically designed to provide a value-based practice model for ED patients who need additional observational services. CDU patients are medically stable and are expected to be discharged within 24-36 hours.

The practice: The physician is responsible for the care and disposition of patients in the clinical decision and inpatient units. The goal in the CDU is to disposition all patients who were admitted the previous day. When the day’s clinical work is completed the “CDUist” signs out to the Emergency Physician on duty who actively covers the unit until the next morning. Thus, the CDU and EM providers function as a team to manage the CDU patients. To accomplish this effectively, the unit is located contiguous to the ED.
