Shift Details:

Every day, over 30,000 Hartford HealthCare employees come to work with one thing in common: Pride in what we do, knowing every moment matters here. We invite you to become part of Connecticut's most comprehensive healthcare network.

William W. Backus Hospital [WWBH], an integral part of Hartford HealthCare [HHC] network, nestled in the rolling wooded verdant hills of Eastern Connecticut, is a well-established not-for-profit acute care community hospital providing comprehensive medical services, personalized attention and care. As its core mission, the hospital is committed to meet the total healthcare needs of people from throughout eastern Connecticut and along the Southern New England shoreline. The Department of Psychiatry, an integral part of the HHC Behavioral Health Network [HHC BHN] at WWBH provides all levels of care for adults ages 18 and above. WWBH [213 beds] has an 18 bed inpatient adult unit, outpatient services at PHP, IOP and Office care levels for individuals requiring behavioral health services or substance use services. Within the system it has been mentioned that the Department is small enough for everyone in the hospital to know you, but big enough to influence the care of patients in almost all other departments.

At this time, the Department is seeking a Psychiatrist to work full time [40 hours / week] providing direct patient care services. The Psychiatrist will divide the time between the in-patient service [along with another Psychiatrist and a Psychiatric APRN] and provide psychiatric consultations for patient admitted to other services and to the ER, if needed.

On the in-patient service, the psychiatrist is expected to provide services, including diagnostic admission evaluations, ongoing psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy, as appropriate. The psychiatrist will work within a multi-disciplinary treatment team and act as a clinical team leader for the coordination and supervision of care provided across clinical disciplines, including providing guidance and leadership to other clinicians on the team in formulating and implementing the treatment plan. The ideal candidate is expected to act as liaison and communicate effectively with outside providers, primary care physicians, and family members, as needed.

The consultation requests are robust and steady, but not overwhelming or busy. The consultation work provides some of the most interesting and fulfilling work.

There is an opportunity for the psychiatrist to provide supervision to selected medical students, residents and non-physician health professionals. The psychiatrist can participate in Medical Staff Committees and is expected to attend meetings as specified in Medical Staff regulations. The Department is focused on the development and maturation of early career psychiatrists. Being an integral part of the HHC BHN, there are several opportunities to become integral to robust, imaginative and visionary system Annual Improvement Projects [AIP]. Current ongoing AIP include initiatives on Early Psychosis Treatments, Zero Opioid Death Initiative, and a Behavior Dyscontrol Project. There are several other HHC BHN initiatives ongoing, such as the HHC-wide Zero Suicide Project as well as the Colleague Wellness Initiative. Every feasible opportunity will be offered and encouraged for projects that the psychiatrist might want to pursue. Avenues for training and development of leadership skills are also available within HHC.

Call will be shared with 4 other psychiatrists during the week. Weekend call is extra and paid additionally.

Connecticut offers you and your family access to a lifestyle that is second to none. Enjoy the finest schools in the nation, four beautiful seasons of recreational activities, and options to live at the shore, in leafy suburbs, or in vibrant urban areas.
