Position Summary
Under the general direction of the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer (CDIO) leads Weill Cornell Medicine’s diversity, inclusion, and equity strategies and programs. This role calls for at least 50% effort of an appointed faculty member – the other percentage of effort will be retained for the faculty member’s academic, medical, or scientific work. The position will oversee the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE), and student diversity and inclusion efforts, and be the institutional representative to the Board of Fellows on matters related to D&I. The CDIO will lead a team of faculty and staff leaders to advance WCM’s diversity and inclusion goals, both across missions and across employment categories (staff, faculty, students, and trainees). They will create and use relevant and meaningful metrics to track WCM’s progress toward hiring, promotional, salary, workplace, and academic equity. Through oversight of the OIE, the CDIO will also oversee WCM’s Title IX compliance efforts and investigations of all claims of harassment and/or discrimination, WCM’s processes for ADA accommodation requests, and other such matters that fall within the purview of the OIE. The CDIO will serve as the institutional spokesperson and expert on matters related to diversity and inclusion, particularly within academic medicine, and as such, actively advocate for and educate the Weill Cornell Medicine community.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversees and has accountability for all Weill Cornell Medicine diversity, inclusion, and equity programs.
  • Leads the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, including providing direction and supervision for the faculty leaders in the office, as well as leading and directing the Executive Council on Diversity and Inclusion.
  • Leads the Office of Institutional Equity, including providing direction and supervision for the staff leaders and investigators therein. Guides and provides oversight to the Staff Equity and Inclusion Council and relevant Business Resource Groups.
  • Oversees WCM’s health equity activity, including identifying ways in which Weill Cornell and its faculty can help address systemic disparities in access to healthcare.
  • Represents Weill Cornell Medicine to the Board of Fellows, including as lead WCM staff to the Board Special Committee on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, and outside entities with regards to D&I.
  • Leads institutional training efforts around diversity, inclusion, and harassment.
  • Is a trusted advisor to faculty leadership to promote diversity and inclusion efforts and establish/maintain a culture of equity and belonging.
  • Defines, creates, and delivers reporting and metrics related to diversity and inclusion, including the production of an annual report on Diversity and Inclusion, which contains relevant measures and statistics related to the workforce, academy, and other relevant areas.
  • Develops and maintains mechanisms for faculty, staff, and students to make a claim of harassment or discrimination and encourages a culture of reporting and openness.
  • Identifies grant opportunities and other relevant partnerships to advance WCM’s diversity, inclusion, and equity goals.

Education

  • As the role is expected to be filled by a practicing faculty member at Weill Cornell Medicine, they should possess a terminal degree in medicine or a medical science.

Experience

  • Several years’ experience developing and implementing organizational diversity and inclusion strategies.
  • Experience managing others and serving as a team leader.
  • Proficient experience obtaining grants or other means of external funding – has demonstrated success articulating mission, vision, and goals to external partners in terms of advancing philanthropic and other support.
