The Associate Scientist in the Shriners Pediatric Research Center participates in exciting ongoing research projects to study molecular/cellular mechanisms underlying axon regeneration failure and neural damage and to develop effective therapies for CNS damage. Performs independent research projects under supervision of the PI, manage research lab including oversight of junior researchers. Designs and executes experimental protocols for assigned projects. Serves as an authoritative source on research practices, precedents, theory, and principles. Supervises division/sub-unit staff and ensures all projects are completed in a timely fashion.

Responsibilities include: conducting molecular biological techniques, such as the generation of viral vectors, gene cloning, PCR/RT-PCR/qPCR, and protein biochemistry, such as Western blotting and protein purification; animal handling, surgery, neurological animal models, behavioral tests, tissue dissection, and histology; performing/developing primary neuronal cultures, cell transfection, neurite/axon outgrowth assays, and imaging collection and analyses; conducting research data collection and analysis, figure preparation, and writing research papers. May serve as Radiation Safety officer. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience: Doctorate Degree or MD and at least four years of Postdoctoral experience.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated proficiency in molecular biological techniques
  • Demonstrated proficiency in all aspects of animal handling/surgery
  • Ability to manage projects
  • Working knowledge of all applicable computer software programs
  • Management skills (including planning, negotiation, and communication skills).
  • Knowledge of applicable professional principles, extensive knowledge of University policies and procedures, and financial and budgeting principles.
