Position Type

The Department of Medicine at the Pittsburgh Veterans Administration Medical Center, located adjacent to the University of Pittsburgh campus, is inviting applications for the position of Chief of Cardiology. Cardiologists at the Associate or Full Professor level with appropriate leadership, academic, and clinical experience will be considered. This is an exciting career opportunity to preside over a dynamic academic Division in one of the VA Hospital System’s largest referral centers for cardiovascular medicine, and to further develop the Division as a distinguished hub for clinical and research activity.

About our Division: The Division of Cardiology consists of 16 faculty cardiologists who offer a comprehensive spectrum of cardiology subspecialty services. We have one of only two cardiac catheterization laboratories in our Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN), and the only VA cardiac catheterization lab in Western Pennsylvania. Our catheterization lab ranks among the highest volume labs in the VA Hospital System nationwide, performing nearly 1400 diagnostic cardiac catheterizations per year and ~450 interventions, including complex percutaneous coronary interventions.  We offer a Chronic Total Occlusion Program, a PFO Program, CardioMEMS implantation, a multi-disciplinary Shock Team, and are currently constructing a state-of-the art hybrid operating room for performing TAVR procedures. Our Cardiac Surgery Service performs ~150 surgeries per year, including CABG, valve, and aortic root surgeries. Our Electrophysiology Section (EP), the only EP provider in our VISN, provides full EP services (~500 devices and ~100 ablations annually). Our Echocardiography Laboratory provides transthoracic, transesophageal, and stress echo services (~6700 studies per year), and we perform ~1800 nuclear stress tests annually. Our cardiologists and 14 nurse practitioners provide outpatient clinic services, including ~5000 clinic encounters and 4000 E-consults yearly, and an expanding Telemedicine service at the Pittsburgh site; we are expanding outreach clinics in counties outside of Pittsburgh.

Our clinical program is additionally nourished by close interaction with the Heart and Vascular Institute at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), where some VA faculty also practice, and by UPMC cardiology fellows who rotate at the VA Hospital as part of their ACGME-accredited fellowship training.

Importantly, our Cardiology Division is strongly committed to the academic mission and mentoring of physician-scientists and next-generation scientific leaders. Five of our sixteen Cardiology faculty have active research programs that are funded by NIH or VA grants for studies spanning basic, translational, and clinical domains. These physician-scientists collaborate with, and have access to, the faculty and facilities of the University of Pittsburgh Heart and Vascular Medicine Institute (VMI), an internationally renowned translational, trans-departmental research institute. Our VA Medical Center boasts expansive laboratory space in a newly constructed research building, which is available to VA cardiology faculty as well as faculty of the VMI, allowing for a uniquely rich multi-disciplinary environment of scientific cross-fertilization.

Applications: Interested candidates should have a distinguished record of clinical excellence, teaching, and scholarly accomplishment, exceptional leadership skills, and a commitment to education, research, and clinical excellence. Candidates should be recognized clinician-scientists with a history of external peer-reviewed research funding and experience in both strategic and operational planning in an academic setting. Interested individuals should submit a curriculum vitae and letter of interest with summary of research and career goals, and contact information to:
