We are seeking a highly experienced translational cancer research pathologist to join the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) and the Pathology Department at University of Arizona Health Sciences. The UACC is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Cancer Center in the State of Arizona. We are increasing our focus on team science initiatives, specifically in gastrointestinal malignancies, with the goal of bringing novel cancer drugs discovered at the UACC to our patients. The qualified candidate will be experienced in translational cancer research and highly motivated, interactive, and creative with the ability to work with basic, translational, and clinical scientists.

The candidate should have a track record in participating with multi-project programs and a publication record reflecting accomplishment in research funded by peerreviewed grants. The candidate should have experience with the development and annotation of biospecimen cores, biomarker development, generation of tissue-based assays, with excellent traditional diagnostic pathology skills and a strong ability to interpret pathology data in the context of a detailed and current understanding of molecular and cellular biology concepts.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center is the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center headquartered in the State of Arizona. The Cancer Center has three research Programs, namely, Cancer Biology, Clinical and Translational Oncology, and Cancer Prevention and Control with strengths in basic mechanisms of carcinogenesis, tumor microenvironment, disparities, and cancer prevention. The Cancer Center is further supported by a broad array of Shared Resources in support of our cancer research activities including but not limited to Human Immune Monitoring, Cancer Imaging, Biostatistics and Bioinformatics, Metabolomics, Behavioral Measurements and Interventions as well as our comprehensive biorepository which provides biospecimen collection, processing, and storage coupled with clinical and risk factor data collection for a variety of cancers. Bidirectional communication with our catchment is promoted by our Community Outreach and Engagement Team. 

Our newly created Office of Training and Education drives the training of the next generation of cancer researchers in our catchment and beyond. Clinical research is supported by 13 Clinical Research Teams and Innovative Working Groups.

Success in this role consist of assisting in identifying, evaluating, and implementing new technologies or techniques in collaboration with cancer biologists and medical oncologists. Strong skill set in developing and implementing multiplexed immunohistochemistry methodologies from antibody selection, staining optimization, pre-analytical variables assessment to downstream digital and imaging strategies with data dissemination and evaluation capabilities. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate, both written and oral effectively and efficiently.

Minimum Qualifications:

• MD/PhD or MD with completion of anatomic pathology and/or clinical pathology residency required.
• Experienced pathologist in a translational setting with 5+ years’ of post-graduate research experience.
• Knowledge of oncology biomarkers
• Demonstrated scholarly work documented by a strong publication and funding record; evidence of participation in team science projects.
• Participated in clinical studies to characterize better the cellular and molecular underpinnings of therapeutic resistance in patient cohorts and correlation with clinical outcome.
• Assist in identifying, evaluating, and implementing new technologies or techniques in collaboration with cancer biologists and medical oncologists.
• Strong skill set in developing and implementing multiplexed immunohistochemistry methodologies from antibody selection, staining optimization, pre-analytical variables assessment to downstream digital and imaging strategies with data dissemination and evaluation capabilities.
• Prior role in multidisciplinary projects and teams with ability to integrate cross-functional information.
• Experience in GI pathology.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Completion of molecular pathology fellowship.
• Image analysis experience, especially with oncology and immune-oncology-based markers.
