Job Details
Provides leadership and strategic medical direction for the Behavioral Health Clinical Program within Intermountain Healthcare in conjunction with the clinical program operations director to ensure that patients receive appropriate medical care and patient care services are delivered while balancing quality, service and cost on an as needed basis.
The Senior Medical Director (SMD), is a system-wide physician executive who provides leadership and strategic clinical direction for Behavioral Health (BH) including the Clinical Program, the Medical Group (MG) Service Line, hospital service line, and state and community health participation within Intermountain Healthcare. The SMD will work in conjunction with the clinical program operations director, MG service line director, hospital operations and community health to ensure that patients receive the right care and services in the least restrictive environment ensuring quality, service excellence and cost effective care.
The SMD will be responsible for the entire spectrum of behavioral health functions and operations in partnership with operations, clinical program, nursing and community health leaders. The SMD will lead system-wide collaborative associations with key stakeholders including clinical program physicians and leaders, hospital leadership, medical leadership, Select Health, Community Health and Telehealth. The Clinical Program advises and consults re: best clinical care and practice. Through the Medical Group, this leader partners to ensure stewardship, operational excellence, leader development and accountability and team and physician engagement across the continuum of care.
To realize these aims, the SMD will need to:
- Develop and operationalize the clinical strategic vision.
- Enhance and build close, collaborative relationships across the system to cultivate a community of mutual respect across programs and departments.
- Emphasize practical, value-oriented, person-centered care.
Essential Job Duties:
- Provide clinical leadership for employed Medical Group physicians, advanced practice providers (APPs) and therapists in the following clinical services:
- Community-based BH
- Inpatient BH
- ED Crisis
- Access Centers
- Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
- Mental Health Integration Clinics
- Connect Care (Telehealth) BH
- Behavioral Health Service Navigation
- Collaborates with the VP, Clinical Programs, the VP, CMO-Community Based Care and the SVP, Chief Community Health Officer in the development and execution of a forward-looking strategy for behavioral health and new care delivery models that drive growth to meet the needs of patients, including execution of these approaches in both risk-based and fee-for-service delivery models.
- Builds a clinically integrated network inclusive of the full continuum of behavioral healthcare (e.g. school partnerships, SUD treatment and recovery, and specialized inpatient care) for value-based care aligning with partners including SelectHealth and Castell.
- Leads efforts in research in clinical program initiatives to determine if initiatives are "making a difference." Evaluates most effective processes and treatments and publishes results.
- Collaborates effectively with national and international partners and organizations to support
- and enhance Intermountain's reputation and influence, and to augment and refine clinical program guidelines and initiatives.
- Leads or co-chairs clinical program teams to develop, support, and implement clinical initiatives aligned with Intermountain strategy.
- Recruits and retains a motivated physician, APP and therapist staff committed to the Intermountain Healthcare culture; nurtures a robust culture of deep professional fulfillment for physicians, advance practice providers and caregivers.
- Builds a culturally competent and diverse workforce that creates improved mental health care, prevention, access and affordability.
- Supports and drives results for the fundamentals of care for Intermountain focusing on reducing the cost of care/per member per month (pmpm) costs, cost per case, improving outcomes, promoting high value care, and improving the affordability of healthcare.
- Relentlessly pursues equity in healthcare.
- Laser focus on improving caregiver experience, particularly the experience of physicians, APPs and therapists.
- Maintains a clinical practice in his, her or their specialty (~20%).
- Lead teams with associate medical directors to promote excellence in each specialty and subspecialty.
- Provides clinical direction for clinical program, emphasizing quality care delivery, clinical research, and service excellence.
- Leads team in development of indications/ guidelines, care process models, medical staff educational materials and clinic/facility implementation tools.
- Works in concert with administrative leadership to ensure regulatory and safety compliance.
- Manages and develop collaborative patient-centered relationships with affiliated behavioral health providers.
- Promotes and supports best practices for operational excellence, continuous improvement and optimization across the behavioral health network.
- Advances Intermountain Healthcare's capabilities in clinically based fundamentals of care and value-oriented, multichannel operations in partnership with operations leaders.
- Develops and implements the vision and strategies for delivering outcome-oriented high-quality care, growth and value expansion to meet the needs of patients in both risk-based and fee-for-service delivery models.
- Identifies and executes on opportunities and new innovations to transform care at scale across all regions, delivering person-centered consumer-oriented care, including through digital, virtual and other innovative models of care.
- Creates a culture of continuous process improvement to deliver Intermountain's vision of extraordinary care, while promoting consistency and strategic direction.
- Identifies, implements and drives performance against quality, safety, equity, experience, access, stewardship, growth and engagement targets.
- Successfully executes on behavioral health strategy in partnership with other critical stakeholders within and beyond Intermountain and the state, ensuring appropriate coordination and integration among all service delivery.

Candidate Qualifications
The ideal candidate will be a transformational leader in behavioral health who has deep insight into clinical care delivery across settings and an outstanding track record of administrative experience. Intermountain is looking for a leader with an expansive view of behavioral health, spanning the entire continuum of care and range of settings, from acute inpatient care all the way to self-care, and an understanding of the connection points for behavioral health with community resources, primary care and population health strategies. Intermountain seeks candidates characterized by integrity, wisdom, leadership skills, and a broad knowledge of biomedical science.
Education and Experience
- A physician (MD or DO degree) with board certification and a track record of notable education and training (education and training are verified) and eligibility for licensure in the state of UT.
- Eligible to hold active privileges at an Intermountain Hospital and be credentialed by Select Health.
- Deep understanding of healthcare industry trends and external market forces impacting behavioral health as a field.
- Experience working in a complex health system, medical group, or risk-bearing organization.
- Demonstrated ability to drive clinician engagement and alignment.
- Experience in the development and implementation of clinical and business quality improvement initiatives.
- Experience building high performing clinical teams, with a proven track record of execution and delivering on an organization's goals and objectives.
- Experience in designing and implementing care models and developing associated clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Experience with change management and leading in the adaptation and implementation of new processes or clinical technologies.
