Chief, Division of Health Policy and Economics

Department of Population Health Sciences

Weill Cornell Medicine, New York City

The Department of Population Health Sciences at Weill Cornell Medical College invites applications for the position of Chief of the Division of Health Policy and Economics.  The Division currently has 12 full-time faculty who publish frequently in high impact journals; these include 7 health economists, 4 physician researchers, and an organizational researcher.  The new chief will have resources to further expand the Division.

Our faculty interact frequently with others in our highly collaborative, rapidly growing department, with other faculty and clinicians at Weill Cornell Medicine, with colleagues at Cornell Tech and Cornell University (including Cornell’s newly launched School of Public Policy), and with New York Presbyterian Hospital (ranked 4th in the country by U.S. News & World Report) and its multi-hospital system.

Our Division currently studies primarily the effects of public and private policies on provider organizations and the value of care delivered.  We focus on incentives, unintended consequences, and the impact of policies and organizational processes on socioeconomic and racial/ethnic disparities.  Our current areas of investigation are broad and include telehealth, private equity, physician management companies, horizontal and vertical consolidation of provider organizations, physician burnout and professionalism, physician turnover, the use of artificial intelligence in medical care, MIPS, alternative payment models, biosimilars, advance care planning, mental health and substance use disorder care, socioeconomic determinants of health, Medicaid, and the healthcare safety net.

The Division offers an M.S. in Health Policy and Economics and participates in the executive MBA/MS program offered jointly by our Department and the Cornell University Johnson Graduate School of Management.  The Department is launching a Ph.D. program in Population Health Sciences.

The Department has significant data resources including the INSIGHT Clinical Data Research Network and extensive data from Medicare, Medicaid, and major national insurers.  We host a state-of-the-art computing environment, the Data Core, which serves as a secure platform for data analysis and includes state and national data available for reuse.

The ideal candidate will have (1) a Ph.D. or an M.D. plus additional graduate training, (2) excellent communication skills, (3) quantitative research experience working with large databases (e.g. Medicare, Medicaid, and/or commercial claims), (4) a strong track record of independent funding, and (5) enthusiasm for mentoring junior faculty.

Interested applicants should submit, via email by June 15th, 2021: (1) a cover letter; (2) a recent C.V.; and (3) the names and contact information of three references to Awista Hamid at awh4002@med.cornell.edu  Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Diversity is one of Weill Cornell Medicine’s core values and is essential to achieving excellence in patient care, research, and education. We welcome applications from candidates who share our commitment to fostering a culture of fairness, equity, and belonging.
