Position Summary

The Chair of Medicine at Maine Medical Center serves as the principal academic, clinical, and administrative leader for the Department of Medicine and is fully accountable for the development and maintenance of efficient and effective clinical operations of the Department’s 18 divisions as well as the development and promotion of collaborative work relationships among clinicians and administrators at all levels across the Department of Medicine and the Adult Medicine Service Line.

The Chair of Medicine reports to the Chief Medical Officer at Maine Medical Center (MMC) and is expected to collaborate with MMC’s Chief Administrative Officer and the Chiefs of MMC’s Service Lines to achieve the clinical and academic objectives of the institution. In collaboration with leadership peers, and through alignment with the strategic plan of Maine Medical Center and MaineHealth, the Chair implements visionary institutional policy, cutting edge clinical ventures, exceptional training programs and innovative research initiatives for the Department and Service Line.

The Chair of Medicine also provides stewardship of seven fellowship training programs, the GME Internal Medicine Residency training program, and the Department’s role in the Undergraduate Medical Education Maine Track program affiliated with the Tufts University School of Medicine. The Maine Track provides for a continuous three-year curriculum that is based in Maine following the first year in Boston.

This position requires a dynamic, passionate, experienced physician and administrative leader with a proven record of success in an academic hospital setting. The ideal candidate has demonstrated capability in academic leadership, leading complex clinical programs, research program development, educational excellence, successful faculty recruitment and retention, community engagement, and experience working in a similarly complex organization.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Substantial (7-10 years) progressive clinical and administrative leadership experience at an academic institution
  • Academic credentials appropriate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
  • Demonstrated high level leadership skills with proven ability to cultivate collaboration and build consensus across diverse clinical and administrative stakeholders, and across organizational boundaries
  • Experience mentoring and developing junior faculty and recruiting diverse trainees, staff and faculty
  • Knowledge of healthcare finance, hospital administration, and strategic planning
  • Knowledge of process improvement methodologies
  • Board certification in Internal Medicine
  • Licensed or eligible for medical licensing in Maine
