Bangor, Maine: We seek an experienced Physician Leader to become the next CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER for a respected FQHC/Community Health Center system in Maine’s 3rd largest city. Join a nonprofit with 850+ employees (including 200+ clinical providers) operating 16 practices and program service sites in three Maine counties.

This is an AFFIRMATIVE ACTION / EQUAL OPPORTUNITY Employer.

This mission-driven organization provides healthcare to all – regardless of ability to pay. Services include primary care/walk-in care, geriatrics/nursing home care, addiction treatment and recovery, dental care, physical therapy, podiatry, chiropractic care, mental health care, on-site pharmacies, a facility for the homeless with adjacent clinic, and more.

You should be US Board Certified in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics. You must enthusiastically support an integrated primary care model. MDs/DOs are equally welcome. We need someone who thrives in a fast-paced, action-oriented setting. Business acumen is important, so candidates with, or desiring an MBA are ideal. Prior community health center experience is preferred. Physicians with training/experience in Geriatrics, Addiction Medicine, Rural Medicine, and/or Mental Health are highly desirable.

As CMO, you will oversee all clinical programs, including those that may be “out of your lane.” You will lead, inspire, and motivate, coach, and mentor your clinicians – building relationships, modeling desirable behaviors, and occasionally seeing/treating patients. You will lead an interdisciplinary team of physicians, NPs, PAs, mental health providers, dentists and specialty providers, along with social workers, housing navigators, and other enabling service providers, to assist in integrating services for patients. You will focus on improving accessibility to healthcare and eliminating disparities in access and health outcomes, with a special focus on engaging the patient where they are, ensuring the most vulnerable patients have access to high quality care.

You will work to maintain a sense of unity system-wide, notwithstanding the fact that the communities served are spread over a large geographic footprint. You will work with Quality leaders to identify, develop, and advocate for improvements, innovation, equity, and new program initiatives. During the pandemic, telemedicine and digital access were introduced and will be expanded under the new CMO.

The CMO has great responsibility and sits on an experienced and innovative Executive Leadership team, overseen by a Board of invested community volunteers. You should be prepared to discuss your personal track record of experience and success in management, leadership, administration, and primary care system transformation, along with the ability to multitask, collaborate, and lead in an organization rooted in team-based interprofessional practice. The CMO will be expected to model a culture of inclusion and accountability, and to foster psychological safety. You will have the immense benefit of being mentored by and working alongside the current CMO as he transitions toward retirement, plus a very experienced Chief Operations Officer in a collaborative, dyad model of leadership. Both will be your mentors, enabling you to take the reins gradually as you become oriented with all aspects of this key position.

You will earn an executive-level salary with benefits including relocation assistance, health and dental insurance, substantial earned time for sick leave, holidays, and vacations, participation in a retirement plan, and more. Education benefits are available for those interested in completing an MBA.
