General Summary:

The Primary Care Senior Medical Director will oversee the primary care enterprise at Maine Medical Partners (MMP)/Maine Medical Center (MMC), and Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC). Collaborating with the dyad of the AVP of Primary Care and Primary Care Leaders, this person will be a medical group leader and responsible for leading operational, financial, value, and clinical activities. Medical leadership in primary care at both MMP and MMC will report to the Senior Medical Director. The Primary Care Senior Medical Director reports to the MMP Chief Medical Officer and has a secondary reporting relationship to the CMO of SMHC.

This role is expected to be 80% administrative and 20% clinical.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides physician leadership in the planning, design, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of Maine Medical Partners and Southern Maine Health Care's care strategies and initiatives.
  • Leads primary care integration of multiple regional medical groups in the formation of Maine Health Medical Group.
  • Works in a didactic management structure in the planning, implementation, quality improvement, and measurement of performance during and after integration.
  • Develops and nurtures relationships with regional primary care directors and primary care providers.
  • Advocates for primary care within the organization. 
  • Upholds the core values of the organization at large.
  • Develops strategies to improve and enhance provider engagement and retention.
  • Promotes the academic (education and research) mission of MaineHealth within primary care.
  • Participates in appropriate senior leadership, board, and committee meetings.
  • Works with respective Department Chairs to develop appropriate OPPE and FPPE

Education:

  1. MD/DO required from an accredited school
  2. Minimum of 10 years clinical practice experience
  3. Minimum of 5 years leadership experience
  4. MBA/MMM preferred, or other relevant advanced degrees

License/Certification:

  1. Licensure as a physician in the state of practice
  2. Federal DEA number
  3. Medical Staff membership and appropriate clinical privileges
  4. Must achieve and maintain Board Certification in respective specialty

Other Skills:

  • Ability to navigate a matrixed organization and develop relationships with multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to flex to the needs of differing stakeholder groups.
  • Knowledgeable of relevant current health care issues, including novel care team configurations and value-based care payment models.
  • Creates, interprets, and comprehends productivity, quality, and financial reports
  • Ability to lead and influence without direct authority.
  • Understands concepts of motivation and organizational culture building.
  • Maintains knowledge of significant trends in healthcare and various regulatory (state, federal, Joint Commission) standards.
  • Strong patient focus.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to model and adhere to organizational Mission, Values, Vision, and Ethics.
  • Strong understanding of principals of patient-centered care, physician compensation systems, medical technology, including electronic medical records, and quality/service improvement strategies.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality when dealing with sensitive medical-legal and professional subjects.
