Job Details

Chief, Division of Rheumatology, University of Massachusetts Medical School and University of Massachusetts Memorial Healthcare, Worcester, MA

The Department of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) and UMass Memorial Health Care (UMMHC) seeks a collaborative and dynamic Physician-Scientist Leader to serve as the next Chief of the Division of Rheumatology. This is an extraordinary opportunity for a physician-scientist to elevate research, advance the academic mission, and expand clinical programs at one of the nation's leading medical schools and academic medical centers.

UMMS, one of the most prominent medical schools in New England, is deeply rooted in its educational goal of providing quality medical, research, and nursing education to its students. Beyond its core mission of distinction in medical education, the past decade has seen UMMS establish itself as a major center for research excellence nationally. The institution also ranks near the top among public medical schools in the Northeast in the amount of funding awarded by the National Institutes of Health. The Department of Medicine has a long tradition of clinical, translational, and basic research excellence, with over $40 million dollars per year in NIH funding. UMMS' clinical partner, UMMHC, is the largest healthcare system in Central and Western Massachusetts, featuring three acute care hospitals and a wide array of clinical services  the entire continuum of care.

Reporting directly to Dr. David McManus, MD ScM, Chair of the Department of Medicine, the Chief of Rheumatology will guide the Division of Rheumatology to the next level through research, scholarly activity, education, as well as growth and advancement of clinical programs. The Chief will build on the Department's existing strong clinical foundation (12 faculty rheumatologists) and expand research activities in Rheumatology to interface with existing Departmental research strengths, including in innate immunity and digital medicine, and institutional strengths, including in Immunology, RNA biology, and gene therapy, while carrying on the Division’s strong commitment to training residents and fellows (ACGME accredited fellowship with four fellows). Reflecting its importance to the clinical mission, the strategic vision for the UMMHC for 2021 includes growth in access to rheumatology services as a major focus.

Diversity, equity, and inclusion are integral to the commitment of the Department and University. Accordingly, the Department seeks qualified candidates who can contribute to racial equity, diversity, and inclusion through service, mentorship, teaching, and scholarship. The Department is especially interested in qualified candidates who have demonstrated commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research, or service toward building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment.

The successful candidate will be an experienced academic leader with a reputation as an outstanding scientist, clinician, and educator. They will have a passion for academic medicine and providing an environment conducive to advancing the academic mission, as well as experience working in an integrated clinical program. The next Chief will be an accomplished researcher with a demonstrated record of scholarly and professional accomplishments, a track record of obtaining federal funding, as well as a record of faculty and trainee mentorship. The next Chief will also be an individual who is committed to providing superior patient care and a desire to improve systems and processes to reach UMMS and UMMHC goals. Candidates must hold a medical doctorate degree, board certification in Rheumatology and possess qualifications for appointment to Associate Professor or Full Professor at the UMMS.
