Planned Parenthood of Southern New England has an opening for a part-time (22.5 hours per week) Medical Director.
Under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer and working in collaboration with clinical leaders, the Medical Director is responsible for leading, overseeing, and/or participating in the delivery of clinical care services, with an aim to ensure high quality care – care that is safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, equitable, and accessible. The Medical Director leads PPSNE’s efforts to advance health equity with a particular focus on improving health outcomes and reducing disparities. The Medical Director provides and models exemplary, patient-centered care in the health centers. The Medical Director oversees the medical component of all clinical services, which may include – but are not limited to – Breast Services (basic), Colposcopy, Cryotherapy, LEEP, Family Planning, Gynecology, Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy, Abortions Services (Medical & Surgical), Infertility (basic), Early Pregnancy Evaluation and Management of Complications, Primary Care, ensuring clinical practice guidelines and care are consistent with both Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and “standards of care.” The Medical Director further serves as Program Director for clinical services and clinical research programs as needed.
Essential Functions:
1. Acts as Physician Program Director for the breast services, colposcopy/cryotherapy/LEEP, abortion services programs, infertility, early pregnancy evaluation and management of complications, gender-affirming hormone care, men’s reproductive health, and limited family practice
2. Functionally supervises and advises the Clinical Program Directors regarding the medical and health care programs, protocol development, and quality improvement
3. Participates in the hiring, evaluation, and clinical management of contract providers to provide abortions or other procedures
4. Supervises clinicians – APRNs, CNMs, PAs – in accordance with state practice statutes
5. Develops, implements, and supports a framework, including developing and implementing performance measurement and improvement plans, to drive PPSNE’s capacity to improve and close disparities in public health and clinical outcomes. Ensures that the voices of clinical teams and patients are centered in program development and implementation
6. Provides medical consultation to Clinicians regarding the clinical management of specific patients; reviews medical incidents and participates in corrective action planning as needed.
7. Partners with Director of Quality Management to review medical incidents, perform root cause analysis and provide corrective actions as needed, and actively participates in clinical RQM meetings. Writes Medical Director’s review, which is submitted to PPFA’s insurance department.
8. Active member of the relevant agency committees and workgroups, management and executive team meetings, budgeting and annual planning meetings, and Board meetings. Presents to the PPSNE Board on health equity, outcomes, risk, and quality management as requested by the CEO
9. Serves as Lab Director for moderate complexity labs, overseeing performance of Rh testing and vaginal microscopy, as well as other point of care testing
10. Represents the agency and work with a variety of internal and external constituencies, including fostering positive relationships with other partner health care agencies, speaking publicly on behalf of the agency, working with community and government organizations, representing the agency at PPFA national committees, etc.
11. Serve as Principle Investigator on research studies that require a physician principle investigator

3. A deep understanding of the “quadruple aim” and the interdependence of clinical quality, patient experience, staff engagement and the financial well-being of the organization
4. Demonstrated ability to use quantitative and qualitative data effectively and to inspire successful delivery on key performance indicators
5. Demonstrated understanding of how race dynamics impact supervisory relationships and organizational culture, and internal and external partnerships, and can demonstrate a history of successfully intervening in problematic dynamics and deepening a racial equity approach within a team
6. Commit to individual and collective continued learning about the intersection of racial equity, health equity, and sexual and reproductive health, and to using a race+ equity lens in their leadership and decision-making
7. Demonstrated commitment to learning about and enhancing practices related to racial equity and the impact of structural racism on healthcare systems
8. Excellent relationship building and communication skills, including a high level of self-awareness, empathy, and humility in interpersonal interactions
9. A demonstrated ability to work and build trust across cultural differences as well as to effectively communicate across differences related to race, class, age, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, ethnicity, language, national origin, or ability
10. Ability to routinely travel throughout the affiliate and to other locations
Education & Experience:
1. Medical Doctor (MD or DO)
2. 4-7 Years of relevant clinical practice and leadership experience
3. Current Connecticut and Rhode Island State licenses, DEA, and state drug control registration
4. Board certified or eligible in Family Practice strongly preferred. Strong experience in comprehensive sexual and reproductive healthcare and demonstrable experience in medical and surgical abortion (1st and 2nd trimester) required
5. Experience in gender affirming care and primary care strongly preferred
6. Abreast of current medical literature, evolving medical standards and relevant advances within the field
